Top Songs Around the Globe

Infographic: Which cities around the world listen to the same music as you?

Who knew that Walk the Moon was big in South Sudan? Or that people in China were currently jamming out to Drake's "Hotline Bling"? New music data from a BBC project suggests that cities across the world have more in common than you might think. The project compiled music data from all over the globe and identified the top music that fans are searching for using Shazam, a mobile music app that helps users identify any song they hear.

The BBC used this data to match up musical "twin towns", or, in other words, cities thousands of miles away from one another that have similar music preferences and tastes. It turns out that a shared love of the same music and artists is one of the many ways that connect the global community, a tribute to the power of music.

Here are five of the most interesting musical twin cities that emerged from the data.

San Francisco (U.S.) and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia)

Miles apart: 8,400

Pop and hip hop are the king and queen of music genres in both San Francisco and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Who would have thought that one of the culture capitals of the United States and the capital city of Malaysia would have the same music favourites? Meghan Trainor reigns as the top artist in both locations with her hit song "Like I'm Going to Lose You" — proof of the 22-year-old's rising fame and fandom all over the world.

Top music artists: Meghan Trainor, Elle King, Drake, Selena Gomez

Album: Title

Artist: Meghan Trainor

Berlin (Germany) and Tepic (Mexico)

Miles apart: 6,100

Top music artists: The Weeknd, Adele, Drake, Sam Smith

What can Germany and Mexico possibly have in common, you wonder? Only a love for the ultra-smooth, serenading songs of The Weeknd and Sam Smith! Both countries also share a preference for R&B artists and their powerful, moving lyrics. While the dry heat of Tepic, Mexico, and the cutting winds and snow of German winters differ greatly, the musical tastes of both countries' residents are clearly not impacted at all by climate.

Album: Beauty Behind the Madness

Artist: The Weeknd

Stockholm (Sweden) and Invercargill (New Zealand)

Miles apart: 10,900

Top music artists: Mike Posner, Adele, Shawn Mendes, Sigala

Both Stockholm, Sweden and Invercargill, New Zealand can't get enough of singer-song writers from Canada, the UK and the United States. Throw in London-based house DJ Sigala, who loves to sample The Jackson 5, and there is even more diversity. And just when you thought there couldn't be more variety, the No. 1 most searched-for song in Stockholm is Mike Posner's "I Took a Pill in Ibiza", which mashes even more geography into the musical data mix.

Album: The Truth

Artist: Mike Posner

New York City (U.S.) and Singapore

Miles apart: 9,500

Top music artists: Adele, Justin Bieber, Major Lazer and Shawn Mendes

The British superstar herself, Adele, tops the Shazam charts in both New York and Singapore. And these two cities aren't alone. Adele's "Hello" was the most searched-for song around the world. The hit single made it into Shazam's Top 10 list in 2,578 cities in November 2015. New York and Singapore share even more than their love for Adele, preferring the fun, electric beats of Major Lazer. Although the electronic music group is based in Los Angeles, that hasn't stopped them from also making the Top 5 most searched songs in both the "Big Apple" and the "Little Red Dot".

Album: Skyfall

Honolulu (U.S.) and Agana (Guam)

Miles apart: 3,800

Top music artists: Alessia Cara, The Chainsmokers, Post Malone, Adele

Honolulu, Hawaii and Agana, Guam are more interested in musical up-and-comers like Alessia Cara and Post Malone. From R&B to electro house, both of these cities love fresh songs from artists that are relatively new to the music scene, regardless of the genre. Case in point, the Canadian singer-songwriter Alessia Cara released her debut album in November 2015, but is already making waves in countries far away from her home town.

Album: Know-It-All

Artist: Alessia Cara
