good but fatally flawed

DSX-A40UI 16/06/2016 by Joss321 (United Kingdom)

I was very happy when I first started using this stereo but after a while I found problems. The build quality is good and the sound quality is excellent considering it's at the cheaper end of the market. Also the stereo was very easy to install and I find the menu interface straightforward and easily navigable - so far so good. I also like the LCD screen; it's easy to read and not overly complex like a lot of car stereos can be. I've moved away from CD's and all I need is the ability to play MP3 files so a USB connection and an AUX-IN socket was the primary reason for purchasing this model...and unfortunately that's where the problems are. Well, the AUX-IN is fine so if that's all you need then the rest of this review isn't really relevant to you, but if you're wanting to use a USB stick, as I did, then you should know about the limitations of this product. 1) For some reason the stereo can only read a maximum of 128 folders (including sub folders and hidden system folders) on a USB drive. So if your music collection is arranged in more than 128 folders then some of your music won't be visible. This is enormously frustrating and means you either have to use multiple USB sticks or you have to rearrange all your music into fewer, larger folders (maximum 500 files in any folder too). For small music collections and 'car playlists' this is unlikely to be a problem, but if - like me - you want to put all your collection on a pendrive then you might have problems. My collection has over 600 folders!! So I had to painstakingly remove them from their Album folders and put all the tracks 'loose' in huge Artist folders. Not good! And then I had to rename the tracks so that they would still play in Album order. It took me hours and is a nightmare to navigate now. 2) And then I found the next problem. Even after I had renamed them ('001-title', '002-title', etc...) and they were nicely in the correct order on my USB drive, the stereo still played them in a random order. It seems to have it's own way of ordering tracks and folders which does not always follow alphabetical logic. It totally frustrated me to the point where I gave up using the USB stick altogether and have reverted to using the AUX jack from my phone which has a much more logical track-listing system. It was a pity though, as the sound quality from USB is noticeably better than via AUX and now I can't take advantage of that. Plus I'd rather not have cables around my dashboard and use up my phone battery playing music... the USB connection would have been much better if it had worked properly. Very disappointed! :( 3) Furthermore, the LCD screen can only display a few characters at a time so reading the track names is very difficult, making it hard and slow to navigate/search through your USB stick. This is not a problem with AUX though, of course. All in all I was disappointed that Sony had not anticipated the needs of users when designing the software operating system. Most people have music collections with much more than 128 folders and if jumbles up the order of your tracks (no, it was not on shuffle) ... well, I think it defeats the whole purpose of having an MP3 player to be honest. I will still keep my stereo as I'm content using the AUX jack and knowing the limitations, as I do now, I still find it reasonable value for money and I expect it will last for a long time (Sony's usually do). But it's a pity that there are these stupid flaws, otherwise it would have been 5 happy stars.

Functional but not intuitive

DSXA40UI 28/12/2014 by rtfield (USA)

This radio does everything I would like it to do but I have to keep the owner's manual on hand because the controls (at least to me) are not intuitive. For example: when I plug in an iPod through the USB connection, I want to be able to maintain the iPod's onboard controls--not have to use the buttons on the radio to choose a song, etc. Unfortunately this radio's default mode is to transfer control from the iPod to the radio. To get it back, I have to click through a series of commands that is hard to remember and requires referring to the manual. Simplicity was the primary feature I was looking for in a radio. This one does seem to be more simple than many of its competitors, with their seizure-inducing dynamic graphics and impossibly complex button/touchscreen combinations. However, I wish this one were even more simple, or perhaps more customizable so I could choose simpler defaults. Other than that, the radio works great, gets decent reception even here in the mountains, and provides good sound.

Great mechless digital car stereo!

DSXA40UI 09/10/2014 by Technologies8 (USA)

I have bought 2 of these. One to replace a sony CD-Xplod unit that worked fine but had no usb aux or anything fancy, free is not fancy but it sounded great! I only use the USB function and it works SUPER FAST! press a button and the song or album switches instantly on a 16gb mini/micro usb that is as small as possible while still having some higher read speed. Read speed of the usb flash disk is the only important thing. Copy your cds to mp3 196kbps up to 320kpbs and write it all once. I have about 25 artists and using 13gb on the disk. The options are very functional and intelligent. Dimmer, turn off aux, turn off demo, change info to Time, everything just read the manual its well documented. Strange however on one car it gets very loud around 20 but the other it requires about 30 to be the same volume DB. This is probally mostly due to the speakers and location. Both vehicles sound great nonetheless. I do not use the remote control, its still in its packaging in the original box Saddest thing is that many places local and online are out of stock! Get this for a simple and well equipped USB or AUX sound system.
