Creating the Walkman®

A conversation with the mastermind behind Sony's ZX2 Walkman®

As a young man, Tomoaki Sato would listen to Billy Joel and study the tonality of the piano. He would then play the songs by ear, but he always wished the music was of better quality. It was this thought that sparked Sony's current Walkman® project leader's passion in sound quality.

Today, Sato says his greatest pleasure is providing music fans like himself with the unique experience of High-Resolution Audio. His background and personal experience has trained his ear to detect the small differences that has allowed him to perfect the sound of music — even Billy Joel's.

The Passion Behind the Walkman®

The first music device Sato ever purchased was a Walkman® in his junior year of high school. At the time, he couldn't afford a home audio system, so the Walkman® was the best option.

"Having a Walkman® allowed me to create my own space, and escape to a new world that only I had access to," Sato said. "When engineering the ZX2 Walkman®, it was my goal to recreate this feeling for listeners and intensify it by making the sound quality both high fidelity and high resolution."

These pleasant memories and early experiences have influenced Sato in creating a Sony Walkman® that delivers premium sound quality. In order to do this, during the development stage of each prototype, Sato reaches out to the sound engineers from Sony's recording studio for their expert advice, so he can best transport the high-quality audio from the studio into the product.

"With the ZX2, you can distinctly hear the different instruments and breath of the vocals," Sato said. "This High-Resolution Audio player brings a sense of environment and air to the listener that makes you feel like you're standing just a few feet away from the artist."

A New Breed of Walkman®

The most recent Walkman® project for Sato is the ZX2. In the past, music fans wanted a lighter and smaller Walkman®, but the latest ZX2 happens to be heavier and larger than many other portable music players on the market. According to Sato, there's a growing number of music lovers who are beginning to value audio quality over weight and size of the device.

By listening to music with a High-Resolution Audio player like the ZX2 Walkman®, music lovers can better relate to their favourite artists' messages

More Than a Portable Music Player

Sato firmly believes that listening to your favourite songs with the new Sony ZX2 Walkman® will be a completely unique experience. The High-Resolution Audio player has 6.5 times larger volume data than a CD player, so there's plenty of space to store all of your favourite albums. The ZX2 Walkman® not only supports High-Resolution Audio, but it can also transform the sound quality of your previously downloaded music from average to superior.

It has always been Sato's goal to provide music lovers with the right tool to listen to music for a great experience like no other. He believes he's finally accomplished that with the release of the Sony ZX2 Walkman®.
