Great sound to partner the HAPS-1 Hi-Res Player

SS-HA1 16/10/2014 by flakjacket (United Kingdom) Verified Purchaser Verified

Having decided to purchase the Sony HAPS-1 I thought long and hard about whether my old speakers would be up to the job of presenting the output from Sony's Digital Sound Enhancement Engine in the best detail and range. I am very pleased I decided to invest in these bookshelf speakers, they project my music files (mostly jazz and big band) with such clarity, presence and depth. Detail you had not registered in the tracks becomes obvious and the jazz vocalists seem to be standing right in the room. It's a pity the speakers only have a single set of terminals but overall they are great performers.

Possibly the most natural sound Ive heard

SSHA1/B 06/03/2014  (USA)

These are very unusual speakers with their one piece aluminium enclosure and dual super tweeters. They are extremely transparent and mercilessly expose inferior amplifiers. I am using them with the Sony HAP-S1 and am hearing the best sound ever. Even better than my TA-DA9000ES and SS-X90ED in terms of resolution and timbral accuracy. The treble is where the increased clarity is obvious but the bass is unusually tuneful and precise. I have only attained these results with the HAP-S1, I tried them with a TA-F501ES which was less exciting even though this amp normally sounds superb. They are obviously attuned to the new HIRES audio gear. But they also have needed a long run in especially to get the bass extension. I suspect the previous review did not give them long enough to run in but I have learned that patience is rewarded with Sony. As regards a recommendation, I think that depends on what gear you have and what sort of sound you want. They give an extremely delicate, refined, neutral and clear sound and they need a good amplifier because they are so revealing. If you are into metallica or rap and want to be blasted away then forget it. They are for hearing the subtle nuances and refinements in acoustic classical and jazz and in that respect I haven't heard anything better at three times the price.
