Zoom DSC-HX1
Four Zoom Methods  Optical, Precision Digital, Smart and HD Smart
Optical zoom
Just like optical zoom lenses for conventional cameras, the focal distance to the “Exmor” CMOS Sensor in your Cyber-shot is changed by physically moving lens elements in order to provide both wide-angle and telephoto coverage. As a result, optical zoom provides superior image quality compared to digital zoom.

Generally speaking, the higher the magnification, the lower the lens brightness. In order to compensate for this, high-magnification zoom lenses are larger in diameter, resulting in bulky, heavy lenses. Sony has overcome this problem with small, superbly accurate zoom lenses that perfectly complement the Cyber-shot’s compact design.
Almost no image deterioration
Precision Digital Zoom
The Precision Digital Zoom function enlarges photos while leaving details faithfully intact by applying sophisticated image compensation based on Sony’s proprietary SRC technology. This function can double the image size regardless of the image’s original size. It delivers less image deterioration than conventional digital zoom, and smoother continuous digital zooming is possible all the way from wide-angle to telephoto.

Smart Zoom
The Smart Zoom function crops a portion of a photo taken at the maximum image size to obtain a zoomed image. When compared with normal digital zoom functions that directly enlarge the image data, Smart Zoom provides better image quality by cropping the data, not enlarging it. The higher the resolution of the original data, the more the image can be “magnified” without losing image quality. Automatic switchover from optical zoom to Smart Zoom as magnification increases is seamless, requiring no attention from the user.

* The zoom magnification varies depending on the model.
HD Smart Zoom
Expand your photographic horizons with HD Smart Zoom*1. This advanced function allows you to vastly increase the zoom range of your Cyber-shot without degrading image quality. Also, since HD Smart Zoom can use the same 16:9 aspect ratio and 1920 x 1080 resolution (2 megapixels) as HDTV, you are now able to view photos on high-definition televisions*2 in brilliant, detail-rich colour*3.

*1 Maximum magnification ratio varies depending on model.
*2 Resolution of image output when the Cyber-shot is connected to HDTV is 1920 x 1080.
*3 Supported only on models with HD output capability.
Extend your reach with 20x optical zoom
Enjoy the breathtaking quality of 20x optical zoom in a slim, compact camera. Smooth, seamless zooming from 1x to 108x expands your photographic possibilities. You can capture magnificent scenes at the 1x setting, zoom closer with perfect clarity using 20x optical zoom, attain 36x zooming at high-definition quality with HD Smart Zoom (16:9) or focus on minute details like faraway flowers with 108x Smart Zoom (VGA). Whether you’re photographing natural scenes or capturing the facial expressions of distant loved ones, the DSC-HX1’s powerful zooming capabilities let you make the most of memorable shutter opportunities.
