01The Technology

What Makes a TV an RGB TV?

How RGB backlights differ from conventional LED TVs and why every brand names them differently.

RGB backlight
Separate red, green and blue LEDs light each backlight zone instead of a blue LED behind a quantum dot layer. The goal is brighter saturated color with high overall brightness.
True RGB
Sony's name for its RGB Mini LED backlight with independently controlled red, green and blue LEDs, used in the BRAVIA 9 II and BRAVIA 7 II.
Micro RGB
The label Samsung and LG use for their RGB backlight TVs.
Mini RGB
The term TCL and Hisense use for their RGB Mini LED models.
Conventional Mini LED
A blue LED backlight with color conversion, typically quantum dots. Still common and capable, but it does not drive each primary color separately.

Which RGB TV Brand Should You Choose?

Where Sony, Hisense, TCL, Samsung and LG fit, based on the coverage available.

For overall picture quality, Sony leads. Independent testing named the BRAVIA 9 II the best RGB Mini LED TV tested, and Tom's Guide called it the "King of RGB TVs" in May 2026. It suits HDR movies, sports, animation and bright living rooms where Sony's processing and anti-glare screen pay off.

Sony is not automatically the cheapest route into RGB. The terminology is not standardized and implementations differ in LED size, optical design, local dimming, processing and calibration, so two TVs labelled RGB can look quite different side by side.

  • Sony

BRAVIA 9 II for flagship HDR and bright rooms; BRAVIA 7 II for True RGB at a lower tier. Strongest overall recommendation.

  • Hisense

The UR9 is reported as a strong value pick with good gaming performance. Weigh its processing, software and support against the lower price.

  • TCL

The RM9L offers very large screens and vivid color, but reported pricing is high relative to OLED alternatives.

  • Samsung and LG

Both sell micro RGB models. Verified model-by-model specifications and pricing comparisons were not available in the research.

03Sony Lineup

BRAVIA 9 II or BRAVIA 7 II: Which Sony RGB TV Fits You?

The hardware differences Sony lists between its flagship and premium True RGB models.

Picture tier
Sony positions the BRAVIA 9 II as its flagship True RGB picture and the BRAVIA 7 II as its premium True RGB picture.
Brightness
The BRAVIA 9 II uses Luminance Booster Pro; the BRAVIA 7 II uses Luminance Booster. Sony calls the BRAVIA 9 II its brightest and most colorful TV.
Contrast
XR Contrast Booster 40 on the BRAVIA 9 II versus XR Contrast Booster 20 on the BRAVIA 7 II.
Screen and glare
The BRAVIA 9 II adds Sony's best anti-glare technology, X-Wide Angle Pro and Immersive Black Screen Pro on 65- to 85-inch sizes.
Audio
Acoustic Multi-Audio+ with Beam Tweeters on the BRAVIA 9 II; Acoustic Multi-Audio+ on the BRAVIA 7 II.
Sizes
BRAVIA 9 II: 65, 75, 85 and 115 inches. BRAVIA 7 II: 50, 55, 65, 75, 85 and 98 inches.

What both models share

Both TVs use RGB Backlight Master Drive Pro, RGB Triluminos Pro with Smooth Color Gradation and the XR Processor. Both offer a native 120Hz panel with XR Motion Clarity, HDMI 2.1 with 4K/120, VRR and ALLM, Dolby Vision, HDR10, HLG and IMAX Enhanced, plus Netflix Adaptive Calibrated Mode, Prime Video Calibrated Mode and Sony Pictures Core Calibrated Mode. Both run Google TV, with Gemini arriving through a software update on select models.

Choose the BRAVIA 9 II when HDR highlights, contrast and bright-room performance matter more than price, or when you want a 115-inch screen. Choose the BRAVIA 7 II for True RGB color at a lower tier or in a 50- or 55-inch size; Tom's Guide said it "might end up being the smartest pick of the year." Compare both in the RGB LED TV range.

04How to Choose

How Do You Pick the Right RGB TV?

A decision sequence that starts with your room and content, not the spec sheet.

  1. Confirm RGB suits your viewing: it adds the most for bright-room HDR, saturated color, sports, animation and big screens, and less for SDR news or basic broadcast.
  2. Compare against OLED if you mostly watch films in a dark room, where pixel-level black control can matter more than peak brightness.
  3. Fix your screen size and seating distance first, then check which models come in that size.
  4. Pick the tier: BRAVIA 9 II for flagship brightness, contrast and audio, BRAVIA 7 II for True RGB at a lower price.
  5. Check gaming connections: the BRAVIA 7 II 85-inch has 4 HDMI ports, at least two with HDMI 2.1 features, and both models list 4K/120, VRR and ALLM.
  6. Compare total value: warranty, operating system, built-in audio, wall-mount plans and included Sony Pictures Core movie benefits.

05Avoid These

What Mistakes Do RGB TV Buyers Make?

The assumptions that lead to the wrong TV or the wrong expectations.

  • Assuming every RGB, micro RGB or mini RGB TV performs the same, when implementation and processing differ.
  • Treating manufacturer claims about color volume, accuracy and viewing angle as independent test results.
  • Skipping an OLED comparison when most of your viewing happens in a dark room.
  • Choosing on peak brightness alone and ignoring local dimming, blooming control, motion handling and upscaling.
  • Judging value on purchase price without weighing smart TV software, processing and after-sales support.
  • Buying for HDR movies but feeding the TV mostly compressed cable content, where premium RGB hardware is hard to justify.
