I am very pleased with this amplifier based on the price that I paid. It was reasonably easy to set up and the sound is excellent on my sound system. However, as others have mentioned in on-line reviews, the screen menus that pop up automatically whenever you turn on the unit are extremely annoying. Whenever the sound system is turned on, the receiver pops up a little menu on-screen and we have to then go to the remote for the receiver and confirm a couple of settings before we can watch TV. There needs to be a setting that will allow you to opt out of these menus. Maybe a firmware update? Would love to know if that is planned.

Bought this a little over a year ago for Christmas 2023. Right around this past Christmas (2024), it began to malfunction by switching to PROTECT mode after being on for a few minutes, and then shutting off automatically. None of the troubleshooting procedures for this problem helped and in fact when all speakers and other components were completely disconnected, the problem still occurred. So Sony support said they would repair it under warranty. I was fine with that so I sent it in to United Audio to be repaired. The latest update on the repair status says that the unit is "not repaired-parts needed are not available." So a product that is still being offered as a new item cannot be repaired because parts are not available. Great. Now I have a useless receiver that lasted a little over a year, that I have to recycle. Very disappointed because I really have liked my past Sony purchases.

Can’t get the Beats 4 to hook up

I bought this receiver 4or 5 years ago and love it most of the time. Mine overheats I think easily and powers down I able to turn it right back on but is frustrating. I also have hooked my receiver with Bluetooth which is awesome. I have not been able to do the same with my Beats4 headphones. Please help me if you can. Thanks

It’s great to hear that after 4 or 5 years, you still love the receiver, especially the built-in Bluetooth feature for streaming audio—that's exactly what we designed it for!
We are, however, very sorry to hear about the two frustrating issues you're running into: the intermittent shutdown due to suspected overheating and the connection trouble with your Beats4 headphones. We certainly want you to enjoy your unit reliably.
Here are some insights and troubleshooting steps for both concerns:
1. Overheating and Shutdown
When a receiver powers down and can be immediately turned back on, it often indicates the internal protection circuit is activating. While this circuit is designed to protect the unit from damage, it usually points to one of two things:
Ventilation: This is the most common cause. Please ensure the receiver has at least 6 inches of clearance on the top and sides. If it's enclosed in a cabinet or entertainment center, it can trap heat quickly. Try operating the receiver outside of the cabinet to see if the issue goes away.
Speaker Load: Check that your speaker impedance (measured in ohms) is within the specifications listed in the receiver's manual). Using speakers with very low impedance can cause the receiver to work too hard and trigger the protection circuit.
2. Bluetooth Connection with Beats4 Headphones
The STRDH590’s Bluetooth is designed for receiving audio (e.g., streaming music to the receiver from your phone or tablet). It is not designed to transmit audio to wireless Bluetooth headphones.

i bought this receiver on 08/10/2025 .it wasn't until the first of October that i wished to use my turntable and cassette player that i discovered that they don't work thru this receiver !!! the turntable plays, but only if the volume is set to it's highest level (100) and still no volume, with no bass or treble adjustments. i tried using a rca to hdmi adaptor to no avail. and now i discovered there is NO hook up for rca cables from my cassette player; (i.e. rca in and out.) and i'm stuck with this worthless unit because Best Buy will not allow me to return it !!!! guess i should have gone with an american made product !!! do not buy this unit !!!!

I've had my unit for about a year now and everything was great until yesterday. My receiver would go into protection mode and turn off. I've tried all the fixes in the trouble shooting guide and now I hope I get my receiver repaired or warranty from what I understand covers my units issue. That has been the only problem so far. For the money it's still worth the $$$. The should quality is very crisp and clean. I'm running all Sony tower speakers for surround center Sony and sub. I'm giving 4 stars because its a newer unit with newer technology but shouldn't break in less than a year. I had an old Kenwood 5.1 system for 28 years never a glitch. I think Sony quality should be better than that but electronics can have issue's.

I bought this receiver a month ago and it has plenty of features and power. The only thing I wish it had would be bass and tremble knobs on the front panel instead of the tv display to make your adjusts but it's no deal breaker for the price.

This is not the experience that we want you to have. Sony's commitment to customer satisfaction is our top priority. Resetting the receiver may help resolve most issues:
1. Turn off the receiver.
2. Hold down (power) on the receiver for 5 seconds. “CLEARING” flashes on the display panel for a while, then changes to “CLEARED *”.
Note: It takes a few minutes for the memory to be cleared completely. Do not turn the receiver off until “CLEARED *” appears on the display panel.

I had a STR k502 which I purchased in November 2001 develop a serious problem in January 2024 after many years of problem- free service. I was considering having it repaired, but a $200+ estimate quickly put that to rest. I found this STRDH590 on Amazon for $269. It only took 2 days to be delivered for free. In my area Amazon usually takes 4 days or more, so I was amazed at that! Setting up was a breeze since I was using the existing speakers and subwoofer from the STR k502. The speaker equalization using the supplied microphone was a breeze. The audio and video processing is superb. The picture on my 50" Insignia is vastly improved and the program dialoge is extremely intelligible. The Bluetooth setup was very simple and connects flawlessly every time and sounds great. So far, it does everything well. I've always liked Sony products and have had good experinces with them. Highly recommended.

Power off your receiver and unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet. Leave the power cord disconnected for at least 60 seconds. Warning - Requires Powered Subwoofer

I bought this to replace a 23 year old TEAC AG-D9100 that died. It took about 30 minutes to connect and test. The auto calibration setup was easy and fast. Quality sound with various options depending on the input media. It turns off automatically when I power off the TV and Media source, and turns on automatically when it identifies the TV and media have been turned back on.

The STRDH590 Home receiver requires 120 V AC, 60 Hz when used in the US and Canada. If you are using the device outside the US and Canada, it may require you to use transformers depending on your location. Some areas in Europe run 230 V power lines which can damage your unit if you do not use transformers. This is considered product misuse and unfortunately is not covered under warranty. I got this over Christmas to replace an older Ya**** that passed on. It is primarily for TV sound. This doesn't have all the sound features I was used to, but I finally got adjusted to a good compromise with the setting for "just like it was mixed". Boy, that varies from channel to channel. The real downside is the HOME menu feature that you CANNOT stop from going through on every start up. It simply can't just return to the last setting, so you have to have it's proprietary remote to CHOOSE, CHOOSE, and EXIT. It's is annoying, it has been reported, but Sony doesn't seem to concerned about fixing it. Other than that, it is OK for the price.

Purchased this to compliment my new Sony Bravis OLED tv. Very easy to connect all my other components to it. Still learning how to use it but so far so good. Only negative thing I have to say about this is the FM antenna which is a single thin flimsy wire which plugs into the back of the receiver. While it does pick up some local stations the reception for most other stations in the area is poor. Sony should offer other options to improve its poor reception. As the antenna plug is extremely small there are no after market options out there.

I've had this several weeks and it replaced a 20 year old receiver - I also replaced my 15 year old television. The 2 work great together. I love the 5.1 surround sound - who needs 7.2? The TV sound coming through the receiver and speakers is great. The remote is mostly self-explanatory. I love the ease of connecting my other HDMI devices and how they connect through this receiver to the TV via the ARC HDMI. I am not sure why I didn't upgrade sooner.

The receiver only allows using HDMI to run the sound of a television through it if the TV has ARC. My 2018 has ARC but it a different brand than SONY. The ARC did not work even though the instructions were followed to turn on the ARC through the SONY receiver. An optic cable had to be purchased to use the receiver. Very disappointed with the initial set up. Works fine now...something to consider if one wants the unit to work out of the box.

Originally sounded and worked fine, but now has developed and issue whereas receiver is stuck in "tv" input and will not change mode or turn off!!

Hi Kellyp, We are very sorry to hear about the issue you are having. This is usually not the case for our AV receivers nor the experience we want you to have. To isolate and resolve this issue, let us start with performing a power reset to the unit.
Turn off the receiver.
Unplug the power cord (mains lead) from the electrical outlet.
Let the unit remain without power for 2 minutes.
Plug the power cord (mains lead) back into the electrical outlet.
If the issue is still unresolved, please try to revert to the factory default settings.
Turn off the receiver.
Hold down (power) on the receiver for 5 seconds.
“CLEARING” flashes on the display panel for a while, then changes to “CLEARED *”.

I bought this after my older 5.1 receiver stopped working. The main reason we use this is for music and the sound quality is top notch! I was pleasantly surprised when the unit automatically detected my older SACDs and I was able to listen to them in surround sound through the HDMI connection! DVD Audio also sounds excellent. My only con is the Startup Guide does not mention "Setting your speaker pattern" which is found in the Operating Instructions.

It's exactly what I wanted. It has an 7 second delay in starting once the power button is pushed but if it gets worse they said they'd look at it.

still learning all this receiver can do but, I am enjoying the smart features and the ability to connect many other devices to it. the only thing I don't like is there is no equalizer! If I wanted to listen to music in a hall, club or stadium I would go there. I wish to listen in my living room and a equalizer would tailor the sound to my liking. Still enjoying it!

This receiver has a nice feature set and good performance, and it was great up until it failed, 1 month after the warranty expired. With all cables/speakers disconnected, it blows the internal 5-amp fuse immediately when powered on. I contacted the Sony authorized repair center and was disappointed to learn it would cost as much (or more!) to repair than it would to buy the same unit brand new as a replacement. The repair is only warranted for 6 months. Now I have to decide if I want to gamble on buying another one brand new, or try a receiver from different manufacturer. A previous Sony receiver I owned lasted decades, I was expecting this one to last more than 2 years. :(

Bought this a little over a month ago and seemed to be the best choice out of reciever I shopped for. My Onkyo 7.1 blew up after a power outage. Now All I need is a 5.1. This is much more compact and cooler running with more than enough power. Before I did not have the ARC and now powers with my Sony TV. Was a fast setup with the mic. Of course all the speaker connections were different so that took the longest part of setup and not Sony fault. Have yet to try the built in bluetooth but I have a external one that connects with Alexa if I want to use it. Very satisfied with it.
