My Very First Recieiver

Previously I had a Home Theatre in a Box system that I had been using for over 10 years. But after learning about Dolby Atmos, I got to thinking about how I could enjoy this more immersive tech in my less than ideal bedroom layout. So I started to research A V Receivers. As I'd just purchased a Sony Bravia 9005 TV (awesome I might add) Sony was high on my list of manufacturers to check out. Long story short, I found this Recieiver to be perfect for my needs. Not too expensive, well built, looks quality and gives me 5.1.2 surround sound. And after watching Avengers: Infinity War last night, I can fully recommend this product. Paired with Canton Movie 75 Speakers, and two over head Armco Speakers, attached to my ceiling, I found my self fully planted in the middle of the action. The volume not even above 24 and I really thought in was at the cinema! Also it's worth noting non Atmos Films benefit from the Dolby Surround mode, as that seems to do a great job, using the overhead Speakers! Better in my opinion then the Neural-X mode. Setting up the Recieiver was a doddle too. Clear instructions provided via online user guides and help guides. The automatic calibration process was simple and very fast. I mentioned my bedroom layout is not ideal but this seems to have compensated for my front three speakers being off axis to my rear speakers. It's certainly not a Dolby reference set up but to me, it still sounds incredible! The remote is very lightweight, easy to understand and sensibly layed out. The front surround mode is also very effective, which surprised me. Also I love how the Recieiver and TV work together, when set up using the 4K ARC facility. I turn on the TV, and on comes the Recieiver taking over the duty of TV sound. As for 4K HDR passthrough. It works flawlessly with my Blu-ray player. I have tried Bluetooth and "Music" mode and again, no complaints. I think a slightly better GUI would have been better but it's still easy to use. I'm hoping this will last me a few years at least. But for my needs, it's perfect!

Sound keeps cutting out

I purchased this about 6 months ago. After about 20 minutes, the sound keeps cutting out. I then need to restart my complete system to get the sound back on. The about 15-20 minutes, it cuts off again. You can hear an audible 'click' as it turns off the sound. Any ideas why its doing this? Purchased online from Best Buy

I bought this receiver a year ago and was very happy until last month when it started going in to a safe mode unexpectedly. I don’t know why it went in to a safe mode, it was in a well ventilated area, updated firm ware, perfectly wired and immaculate. I called customer support and trouble shooted and they determined it needed to be sent in for repairs because it was still under the 1 year warranty. So I sent it in and received it after about weeks time and when I seen what was sent back I was shocked. The receiver was completely crushed and compressed on top and on its side and had chips on the corner as if it was dropped on its corner. Through the vent holes you could see a yellow sticker which I could only assume was either a refurb or service sticker because my brand new that was purchased 10 months prior had no suck sticker. I was so shocked and confused because the box it came in had no suck damage at all and the unit itself was in thick protective bubble wrap so, SONY not fedex was completely at FAULT for this issue. I couldn’t believe such a company would allow their customers to be serviced in this manner. so I contact customer service again and was told to take pictures of the unit and the box it was sent in and a rep will contact you with the next step. So I took numerous photos of the unit and box and was contacted by email 4 days later and was told I would be able to receive a replacement new model/ new comparable model or I can do a buyback. So of course I chose option A because the product was great when it worked but then 2 days later I was emailed that they do not have my unit in stock, even though the online store had plenty of stock, so I have to do a buyback which is essentially a refund but they don’t refund you to your original payment they send you a check of your refund. So now here I am waiting for this check to arrive in the mail with all these high end Sony speakers just sitting in my living room. I never wanted my money back I just wanted another receiver. I am utterly amazed at how Xbox, Amazon, Target and even Walmart care more about customer service than Sony. If you buy this product I hope it works for you so you don’t have to deal with horrible product replacements and the worst customer service of all.

Non-functional after 7 months

I bought this receiver from Amazon on 3/21/25. The receiver quit functioning after 7 months. All wires were disconnected and reconnected. The unit goes into protect mode and shuts down. Since the receiver is under warranty, please send a replacement.

My unit started going on protect mode every 2-3 minutes, with or without speakers, call support for a repair and sent my unit i used all kinds of bumpers and protectors to make sure my unit wasn't damaged on the way, when I gon it back it had dents and scratches I bought it on mach 2025 sent it july got it in 8/8 3 months

My first ever AV receiver with HDMI

In 2006, I bought my first ever AV receiver, a Sony STR-DG500, which suited me very well. While it could accept a variety of analog and digital audio inputs, the only video inputs that it could accept were components and composite. This arrangement worked fine because my cable TV set top PVR could supply digital audio over optical fibre, which the old receiver could accept. Fast forward to 2019, when my ISP introduced a new generation TV streaming device intended to replace their old generation set top PVRs. Unfortunately this streaming device had no digital audio output other than HDMI, which my old receiver couldn't accept. Knowing that sooner or later my ISP would stop supporting their old school set top boxes, I realized that I needed to replace my 19 year old AV receiver with a modern one supporting HDMI. To reward me for my 27 years as their client, my mobile phone company sent me a very generous gift card, which could only be redeemed at their partner's on-line store. The only product that I was attracted to in that store was a Sony STR-DH790 AV receiver, which would make me ready for the day when my ISP would force me to migrate to their new streaming device. Installing the new AV receiver took some time. I had to discover how to set my speaker pattern to 6.0 instead of the default 7.2. I had to discover how to get my cable TV set top PVR remote to control the receiver’s volume control. I was fortunate that I could connect all of my old devices to the new receiver, including my PVR, my bluray player, my turntable's stand-alone pre-amp, and my SACD player (only its front R and L analog audio channels). I appreciate that the Sony receiver works well with my Sony LCD TV. If I press the power button on my PVR's remote, then my PVR powers on. This in turn causes the receiver to power on, which causes the TV to power on. I have slave loudspeakers (stereo only) located upstairs in my living room which are wired to the receiver in parallel with the basement home theatre speakers. The receiver's remote allows me to quickly toggle back and forth between 2 channel mode (for my upstairs stereo speakers) and multi channel mode for the 6 loudspeakers in my basement home theatre. Something new with this receiver, that I never had before, is Bluetooth. Now I can stream all the songs on my mobile phone to my new receiver, even when I am upstairs working near my living room stereo speakers. I still have 2 unused receiver HDMI inputs available for future devices that I can eventually add. I can't wait to upgrade my TV (purchased in 2013) to 4K. Since Sony TVs last so long, it may take a while before I will be motivated enough to replace it.

I use it with an Apple TV media box and Blu-ray player to play music, video, and games using a speaker system i've accumulated over the years. Sony products are usually very solid. I did read some of the negative reviews, I was concerned, but I pulled the trigger anyway. Besides, it's Sony, and I have had very reliable products from them in the past. Like the reviews say, 6 months in an it would go into Protect mode. Even with nothing pluggin in, it would revert to Protect mode. I did file a warranty claim, sent it in for repair, and received a bit of run-around from the "authorized repair center." They were ready to ship it back or scrap it since I purchased it from some individual's name they gave me. They requested a receipt be emailed to them to start the warranty process, which was from Best Buy, so I was confused. Another copy of the receipt was included with the receiver, but the warranty was denied anyway because of them saying I purchased it from a person. After insisting this was purchased at a big box store, they finally decided to replace the unit. According to the repair notes - Parts were not available to fix the unit. What did I buy? I am glad to have a replacement coming, but I will be VERY wary of this Sony receiver. What is going to happen in another six months after it arrives?? If you do have to send yours in for repairs, be persistant. Much like the medical industry, I suspect they deny claims to save a buck until you push back. They tried to deny my claim on a 6 month old product with a 2 year warranty. Sony needs to rethink their warranty repair outsourcing.

This received worked until it just suddenly didn't. All the suggested fixes mentioned have not worked so far so were stuck with a receiver that turns itself off after only 5 minutes of use until or unless we get SONY to repair or replace. We are still under the 2 year warranty (only had it for 6months) so we shall see what happens next....

I bought this to replace my old Sony STR-DE1075 which still worked great but had no HDMI input capability. I wanted Dolby Atmos and the STR-DH790 provides this. I am using it with a Roku Ultra and there are many Dolby Atmos videos on Youtube but none will really blow you away like I was hoping. I have yet to use it for a Dolby surround sound movie but look forward to hearing the full effects once I do. I know that the STR-DH790 is providing the full surround sound so I just need to find a good video to really try it out.

All around it's a solid receiver, just lacking in the feature department. Menus could be better and more options. Sony cheaped out and only allowed for banana plug ports for the left and right channels, center and surrounds are bare wire terminals. Having some issues with passthrough with Xbox Series X as well, having to bypass the AVR and go through the tv for full functionality. This could very well be user error, but I can't find the correct setting... it shouldn't be difficult. I do really like the Bluetooth connection, love being able to stream from my phone. What sold me was the eARC and it pairs well with my Bravia OLED with the shared remote function.

If you continuously use this receiver at a large volume, the cabinet temperature of the top, side and bottom rises considerably. To avoid burning yourself, do not touch the cabinet.
-Place the receiver in a location with adequate ventilation to prevent heat buildup and prolong the life of the receiver.
-Do not place the receiver near heat sources, or in a place subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust, or mechanical shock.

If you want to get atmos/dts:x for a simple setup, this is the one. For sure, you won't find advanced features like app control but it's perfect for small setups. The only thing I would request by the sony development team is to add another speaker configuration option via firmware. This setting should be 'rear high'. Because dts:x ignores, 'surround dolby speakers', 'front dolby speakers' and 'top middle speakers'. The only height setting that works for dts:x is 'front high speakers'. This is because dts:x only has four height speakers and not six like atmos. Aside from that, everything is as you would expect. Plays nicely via eARC and with hdmi cec. 4k passes through nicely on this.

I have had this avr for only 2 weeks and have not been able to even tell the unit to set for 5.1 system. I am finding the software difficult and the manual next to useless. My previous avr was an onkyo and I had no problems setting that up. Will plod on with the help of google and YouTube videos.

To set the speaker pattern using the TV screen, follow the below steps:
-Select [Easy Setup] from the home menu.
-Select [Assign Surround Back Terminals], and then select [Height Speakers] on the next screen.
-Set [Speaker Pattern] to [x.x.2ch] (i.e. [5.1.2ch], [4.1.2ch], etc.).
-Set [Front High/Top/Dolby Speakers] to [Top Middle Speakers] or [Front Dolby Speakers].
-Complete Auto Calibration by following the on-screen instructions.

I bought the receiver a few weeks ago. It was $100 off the regular price plus I was able to get another discount through Capital one which was the reason I made the purchase. I love everything about the receiver except: if you run your hdmi video feeds through the receiver to the tv you will constantly have the receiver setup screen popping up on your tv. If you don't need to run the hdmi through the receiver then you will not have a problem. The receiver is designed to shutdown if it gets to hot so you'll have to be mindful of how loud you have it or how much open space there is where you place the receiver. You can always put a fan on top of the receiver to keep it cool.

Sony products work good at communicating together. I'm more of an advance user for this area and Setup for the receiver was a nightmare due to the fact there is no diagram menu in print to follow the remote menu access and what the abbreviations mean on the receiver. It took me 3-4 hours of frustration to finally get the speaker system set to hear the center channel speaker. The displayed receiver menu on the TV and the receiver menu on the receiver do not set the same together. Finally had to spend hours going through the menu on the receiver to figure out the speaker set setup to get the 5.1 - 7.1 choices set up and selected. Sony need to be printing a remote setup diagram with explanations to follow through each section and which arrows and set buttons to be pressing. Sony has known this for years and GET IT FIXED!

I needed to replace my Yamaha RX-A780 7.2 home theater receiver after I lost two channels, and being on a budget didn't think I could get a decent replacement with what I had to spend. I figured I would get this as a stopgap fix but I am pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to set up (the Yamaha had a zillion connections to deal with) and use. The Yamaha sounded great but I really didn't need 6 different settings for say, a hall in Munich to enjoy movies or music. The setup menu was super easy to follow, I would recommend this receiver for any budget minded person to enjoy 7.1 home theater sound. Let's face it - a soundbar takes up less room but if you watch movies or stream music as much as I do, this is far better.

(1) Not clear that an HDMI cable is required, along with optical audio cable, to complete calibration set up. That is the only way to view instructions on some televisions. A youtube video might help. (2) Had to return the 1st one because there was a screw loose when removed from box. Otherwise happy with product, thus far.

It was a great product and enjoyed the sound delivered but suddenly the product Bluetooth connection stopped working. Hopefully Sony's customer service can do something better to help as none of the suggestions in their website work.

I purchased this receiver to replace my Sony receiver that was starting to act up ( the display was not always on ) I have all other Sony equipment and wanted to stay with Sony as I have been very happy with this brand. I was pleasantly surprised that the receiver not only was easy to set up but unlike my previous unit, the receiver recognized all the other gear and actually allowed the sat remote to act as a master so I didn't have to use the main remote to turn it on. This all happened without me having to set it up !

The Dolby Atmos sounds great. Be sure to play with the settings on the devices feeding into the unit. At first my Roku Ultra was trying to upconvert everything to Atmos and it was just Ok. Once I set the Roku to passthru it let the receiver decide what to decode. Worked much better

Protection mode issue after first day

Worked fine the first night I had the unit. Within an hour of watching tv on second day we heard a big pop. The speakers went dead and unit went into protection mode. Troubleshot steps taken, called tech support and troubleshot again. No luck with av receiver correcting issue. It was suggested to have unit sent in for repairs.

Had a prior Sony AV receiver that finally died after 10 years. Wanted a replacement that would connect to our existing 5.1 system with remote speakers for our deck and other rooms. The STR-DH790 was easy to install and the easy setup made calibration a snap. The only issue was the change in speaker connection plugs on the prior system to snap in terminals on the DH790. The bluetooth function allows me to play music directly from my phone. So far so good.

The Sony STRDH790 receiver seems to do everything that I want, It does have one quirk though. When I turn on my three units, Shaw TV digital box, TV and Sony receiver, with one button on the Shaw remote, all the units turn on but the Sony receiver then has a screen come up that makes me have to press the Sony ok button twice to get rid of it. A little annoying but not a deal breaker. Would be nice if Sony came up with an update for it.

Bad and no one has ever seen the problem. No atmos sound so bad for me. I don't like the sound or the meny on the receiver since it can't even get a signal on the screen. Bad thing for the Playstation 4K not to be possible to use 4k useless for me, so I don't think I will be a good idea to use it

As the receiver is equipped with HDCP 2.2-compatible HDMI jacks, you can also enjoy 4K content via streaming services, satellite broadcasts, etc. And you can use a Game console such as PlayStation for example, you can find more info here: https://bit.ly/3ODbHJQ
Also, you can set the the HDMI Signal Format to "enhanced " to get 4K/60p when you're connecting a 4K device or a gaming console.
