DSD native playback
Co-developed for High-Resolution Audio by Sony and Philips, the companies behind the original CD format, DSD offers a revolutionary way of capturing and playing back audio. Its sampling frequency is 128-times that of CD, and it offers 8 times the data volume of CD, to take audio to a whole new level. Totally different from PCM format, DSD uses a pulse-density modulation encoding method to store audio, expressing sound through the pulse intensity of a 1-bit digital audio stream that more closely represents the nature of an analog audio waveform. This enables the delivery of warm, natural analog-like sound coupled with the digital advantages of wide dynamic range and frequency response surpassing 100 kHz. Since the STR-DN1070 supports DSD (Direct Stream Digital) native playback, there is no conversion involved so DSD content can be fully enjoyed without losing any of their original purity.
High quality DA converter
DSD delivers audio with an immense sense of space and accurate representation of an artist’s original vision. By selecting DSD Native playback, DSP processing is bypassed to deliver DSD original purity as-is, but if you prefer you can select DSP processing with 32-bit DA conversion as well. What’s more, multi-channel 5.1ch surround with DSD 5.6 MHz delivers a truly immersive home cinema experience in which the advantages of DSD can be appreciated to their fullest.
32 bit processing
Non DSD native playback is also supported, in which DA conversion is performed on the DSP output that has been processed in 32 bits "as is". The superior DSP technology that Sony has cultivated for AVR enables all features to be upgraded by undergoing 32-bit DA conversion.

Advanced Digital Cinema Auto Calibration
Enjoy immersive movie sound wherever you choose to sit. Advanced Digital Cinema Automatic Calibration (ADCAC) optimises audio performance to ensure well balanced sound. Use the supplied mic to measure the acoustic properties of your room in relation to where you sit, and the position of your speakers. The system adjusts and tunes sound accordingly, eliminating any weak sound spots to establish a wide, natural sound stage.
Centre Speaker Lift Up
Centre speakers are typically positioned below the screen, so all centrally located sounds come from below the screen. This feature enables the centre speaker to appear to be located at the position of the screen. The height of the sound from the centre speaker can be raised to a desired height. (This works with actual installed front high speakers.) The centre speaker lift up can be set to 0 (OFF) or between 1 and 10. With a higher setting the centre position is raised, so listeners can customize this function to suit their preferences. This function can be used with A.F.D. mode (which adds no sound field) and movie modes like HD-Digital Cinema Sound, etc.
In-ceiling speaker mode
This feature will virtually re-locate the Front and Centre speakers of the in-ceiling speakers to around the screen. Now the customer will hear their characters' voices coming from the screen instead of the ceiling. This mode also makes music sound more natural and rich in the room with in-ceiling speakers.
HD Digital Cinema Sound®
Emulate the exceptional acoustics of the iconic Cary Grant Theatre at home. Developed with Sony Pictures Entertainment, HD Digital Cinema Sound® is based on measurements taken at the Cary Grant Theatre – used in dubbing sound for Hollywood movie productions – so you can give every film you watch the Hollywood movie treatment.

Fine sound resistor (surface-mounted resistor for audio quality)
The trend in electronic circuitry is increasingly high density, also increasing the need for resistors that can be mounted on compact surfaces. Sony therefore collaborated with component manufacturers to develop the “Fine sound resistor”, a high audio quality surface-mounted resistor. In addition to using special resistance materials and a newly developed structure, pure copper was used in the electrodes to achieve high volumes of data for rich, vivid audio quality.
High audio-quality capacitors
Newly developed high audio-quality surface-mounted electrolytic capacitors, together with a more robust DAC power source and optimized substrate patterning, help to achieve a stable low range with high resolution.
Pre-amplification volume IC
Newly developed for the STR-DN1070, the pre-amplifier IC CXD90035, completely separates the ground in the IC and draws it outside of the IC. As a result, interference between each stage is eliminated, enabling high stability amplification to realise high-quality sound with rich low frequencies. In addition, the internal amplification circuit's new design improves excess properties and reduces distortion, for sound with a more open and airy feel.
The STR-DN1070 offers improved structural stability for better sound via the analog signal path. This circuit is located on a glass epoxy board in order to achieve higher speed and power.
Precision Crystal Oscillator
All master clocks for digital audio sources, especially HDMI, can be regenerated from this crystal in purest quality. As a result, the sound produced delivers a clear and rich sound image while bass is deeper and more solid. Typical crystal oscillators are hermetically sealed and filled with nitrogen, but this method is susceptible to external vibrations that can interfere with the clock signal to produce jitter. So for the STR-DN1070, a vacuum-sealed Crystal Oscillator was chosen. This precision crystal oscillator is further enhanced with gold-plated electrodes. Gold is a well-known material for oscillators most notable for its property of adhesion to quartz that is strong enough to maintain contact even under strong physical shocks, and not forming oxides that can interfere with conductivity.
Localised Analogue Power Supply
The supply-ground path around the devices is voltage regulated locally to ensure that high frequency elements are minimized, thereby reducing electromagnetic radiation from the circuit and keeping the analogue signal path and amplifier circuit noise free. This design delivers an improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio of digital audio and digital video signals so low frequency sound is more defined, with greater purity and reality.
Jitter Elimination Circuit
For STR-DN1070, an ES type jitter elimination circuit is used for all digital audio sources. It is a combination of carefully tuned analog and digital PLL circuitry. Unlike the conventional method, the target value is not the input master clock, but the timing reference of a precision crystal oscillator. This analog PLL has a high cut-off frequency, following the jitter with low timing reference. In addition, the circuit also has a digital PLL, and the input master clock and VCO are compared by this digital PLL.
Sony Tuned Electrical Components
Large sized custom made block electrolytic capacitors are used for the main power supply. Selected audio grade resistors are used in all analogue signal paths. Large sized resistors are used together with the original type at selected critical locations. A bigger sized body offers less impedance drift from any thermal effect caused by current flow. This helps the amplifier to achieve a higher grade of sound imaging.
Premium construction for optimum sound
For optimum audio visual performance, the STR-DN1070 uses the highest quality components and design. The rigid steel chassis uses a frame and beam design to reduce external speaker pressure for more focused sound. All the four corners are embossed to better support the weight of the power transformer and heat sink. The heat sink design maximizes air intake into the amplifier circuit, helping to withstand unwanted sound pressure — all combining to deliver powerful, refined sound.
Large Capacity Power Transformer
A process of vacuum varnish achieves flat and even varnishing on internal wiring for the power transformer. Inclusion of both a copper short-ring and steel hum-proof belt around the coil and the core prevents noise leakage. This achieves rich bass and fine reproduction of image detail, plus more powerful bass and lower frequency drive. The level of detail helps deliver more accurate acoustic bass and vocals, offering a new sense of clarity with space.
Heat Sink Design
By studying the fin shape and controlling the uniformity, good and stable sound can be achieved. The amplifier circuit is able to better withstand unwanted sound pressure.
Second generation ES solder
Years of sound engineering experience and continuous sound testing by Sony helped to create an ES-grade sound quality solder. A high purity tin base is mixed with small amounts of specially chosen metal elements to create a special alloy capable of delivering sound that is responsive and very smooth.
Digital circuit board
The circuit board for the digital stage is secured with strong metal frames to protect the board from speaker sound pressure. This heat sink bracket takes on the duty of shielding the digital circuit from unwanted radiation, and shields the high impedance circuit in the main body from unnecessary noise, thereby realising clearer sound quality.
