It is a nice lens with good results both in still image and on video. Unfortunately, everything stop there! The lens is too noosy for use in with friends in an event like wedding. Even on video you can hear the focus micro-adjusting. Due to the noise, i learn to shoot with the back button focus and that only in single focus as the continuous focus sounds like a tractor. I prefer my manual off brand 50mm f1.4!

After a month of using, so far, autofocus is responsive enough great for stills. When recording videos, picture quality is really good but whenever it autofocuses, it makes a noise that can be heard when you record videos.

The images are decent in the sun. Even with a F1.8 aperture this lens does so poorly in low light. Images are soft and not sharp indoors. Using this with an a6700. My canon rf 50mm attached to a Canon R7 was exceptional. It locked on instantly and took super sharp pictures. Skip this 50 and get something better. No OSS either.

The Sony FE 50mm F1.8 is arguably the best budget lens at this price point for Sony full-frame cameras. It delivers great portrait photos with beautiful background blur (bokeh) thanks to its wide f/1.8 aperture, which allows for excellent subject isolation and low-light performance. However, it does come with a trade-off — the lens produces noticeable focus noise while autofocusing. While this might not be a deal-breaker for photography, it’s less ideal for video work, where silent operation is crucial. So, while it can create great videos, I wouldn’t recommend it for video recording due to the noise. That said, for the price, it’s a fantastic lens for anyone looking to shoot sharp, vibrant portraits without breaking the bank. Overall, it’s a great value for the price and an excellent addition to any beginner or budget-conscious photographer’s kit.

I bought the lense and was supposed to receive it on a Wednesday; either SONY or the shipping company sent me the wrong item, but I never received the lense. I contacted customer support as soon as I got the incorrect package and was told that it would take approx. 2-3 days for customer support to review my case and send me a replacement. It has been ONE week, and I have only gotten a call stating that the review is in process, nothing more! I am out the $200; a replacement hasn't been sent. Customer support has taken their sweet time. Other companies would usually refund you instantly or send you a replacement asap. SONY doesn't.

I use this lens on my Sony a7R Mark II and I love it, it's a Full Frame Lens with a nice clarity that produces great pictures. At F1.8, this lens is capable of taking good images in low light conditions and also produces a lovely background blur when taking pictures at full aperture, especially on portraits. This lens is also great for video, it has a "low breath" when focusing, it's not fast, at least on my a7RII, but it will do the work, with almost zero out-of-focus images when doing a high fps shooting.

People go on and on about “if you don’t need to shoot sports this is a hidden gem”. Don’t believe them. This is the actual worst first party lens I’ve ever used. Not only is the autofocus non functional (as in it hints on a static object, like a building, in full daylight) but when it does “lock” it’s wrong. I took 35 autofocus photos. Not one was in focus. You may say.. wait a building, trust me I tried everything including half a building with a blue sky behind it. For those long time experienced Sony users. My original rx-1 focuses at least three times faster than this lens on an a7iv. So fortunately I also decided to test sharpness. So I set it to f11 and focused about a a third if the way into a scene inside the DOF - awful. I focused directly on a few objects, awful. It’s less sharp than a 2010 nex kit lens. It hunts in broad daylight, it locks out of focus on a building even, it’s cheaply built, it’s not sharp, no weather sealing, bad manual focus feel, there is nothing redeeming. Again, and I really can’t stress this enough, it’s the actual worst first party lens I’ve ever owned across 5 major camera brands. Don’t buy it. Mom shocked they’re still putting this out there, it’s an absolute stain on their reputation. Everyone has a nifty fifty. None of them are this bad. Let’s see if Sony accepts this review.

Overall a good low cost prime, your classic nifty fifty. Everything put together while for the price but would have liked a pouch to keep it in that you get with other manufactures like Viltrox 20mm. Biggest issue is motor noise, its loud and audible on video

using this lens already 2 years. I like it! It came with the version 1 firmware and the focus motor was extremly loud. but after updated to the ver. 3 the motor went bit quiter. Still loud but for photography its okey. otherwise only few time its fail to find the focus.

I needed a simple 50mm for street photography, had to be lightweight, and compact but have a reasonably fast aperture. Didn't want to break the bank so this little nifty fifty was a great buy. It has drawbacks 100%, it's not the fastest AF in the world, it's not the sharpest tool in the box, and it's a little noisy but it's a workhorse! It's very light, the 1.8 aperture gives a beautifully soft background, and its sharpness is not that bad, especially for social media. If you want a reliable, fast, cheap Sony branded Prime lens, you simply can't get better.

Compact, sharp and produces good looking images, bokeh is fine. The price tells everything. Good allrounder and great for starters. Unfortunately the autofocus reliability is questionable. I tried few portraits and those were great. After I tried some portraits of flowers in garden and there it struggled with autofocus especially when the flowers shaked due to light breeze. The size of the lens is great.

A suitable lens for Street Photography

This length is very light bright and sharp. I use it coupled with my Sony A7C, obtaining an extremely versatile and portable kit. The only defect is related to the presence of the stepper motor, that makes the autofocus quite noisy and a bit slow. Despite this, the lens has a great quality over price ratio.

Hunts like crazy

I shot with Nikon for about 15 years before I went with Sony. When I purchased my first Nikkor 50mm 1.8, it was like finding photography again. Sadly, when I purchased the Sony 50mm 1.8, it was a terrible let down. This lens spends most of the time hunting for focus. Even in brightly lit conditions and stopped wide open at f1.8, it still struggles unless there is obvious contrast. Lower the light and shut the aperture down and you're in for a nightmare photo shoot. I have no idea why this lens is so bad as I've heard the 55mm 1.8 is fine. Firmware? Hardware? Who knows. It's just a poor lens. Nikon's 50mm1.8D can be sourced for about £80 new and it is blindingly fast. Sony's AF system on my A7mk3 is much faster than the Nikon D750 I had so it's defo a lens issue.

Nifty inexpensive standard lens, bang on the money

One of the first lenses you should buy for A7 series, or if learning about depth of field and perspective. A sharp, compact inexpensive lens with solid if not class leading IQ (although there are lenses costing far more that don't perform any better) these got a bad rep for sluggish focus in earlier incarnations, I've found that with the camera and lens firmware up to date it's about where I would expect, rear button AF and considered choice of focus mode for your subject will also help. If you have a very high resolution camera, such as the R series, A9 or A1 you may want to look at a lens which can more closely match your sensors capabilities, although, for the money, this is pretty decent.

Great Lens, Okay Autofocus

This is the first lens I bought for my first full frame camera after switching from Nikon and it hasn’t disappointed me too much yet. It has great image quality, the bokeh is pretty nice of this lens, and it’s lightweight and affordable. The only thing I don’t like on this lens is that I wish the autofocus was in line with the 35mm and 85mm f/1.8. It is very loud in single autofocus and noisy in continuous focus. The autofocus is also not 100% accurate and it’s pretty clunky and slow. I take portraits, so it’s fine for now. I’d recommend for anyone starting out over the 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens.

I recently bought the Sony A7R IV and was recommended this lens to go with it. Wide open, this lens is almost unusable because of the terrible green fringing. I'm still seeing fringing even at 5.6...I wish they would have recommended a different lens.

Makes terrible video. Does not focus well. Focus is too slow for video. Maybe okay for photos, but not video. Get a different lens. The Sony mirrorless cameras deserve better than this.

I bought this about 3 1/2 months ago and the F stop showed up with dash lines and made the picture blurry. I'm not happy with this. Something so new should not look blurry.

Happy with the quality of the pictures. Sadly, 3 months into using, the lense has developed a "tik", where after focus, it jumps around. So far, unable to get the issue taken care of through original seller or Sony, and since Sony Warranty Claims are shut down, hoping I can get it resolved/repaired/replaced soon as it is entirely annoying. Even so, one of my favorite lenses.

nice lens but noisy

It is a nice lens with good results both in still image and on video. Unfortunately, everything stop there! The lens is too noosy for use in with friends in an event like wedding. Even on video you can hear the focus micro-adjusting. Due to the noise, i learn to shoot with the back button focus and that only in single focus as the continuous focus sounds like a tractor. I prefer my manual off brand 50mm f1.4!
