2010 Mercury Mountaineer Premium Upgrade

My new Sony XAV-AX4000/Q was professionally installed yesterday. The installer was very impressed with the quality of the unit and included accessories. The steering wheel controls fuction with the adapter box. I like that it will show which door is open or ajar plus the tire pressure in each tire, excluding the spare. The vehicle is equipped with a SiriusXM antenna for the OEM stereo system but the installer could not get the antenna to work with the new Sony unit. I'm not a subscriber so it's not a deal breaker. In addition, the backup camera automatically activated when the vehicle is placed in reverse.

Great radio, bad CarPlay system

I love the stereo unit and would give you a 4.5 or five point review. If only my CarPlay doesn’t switch back from radio to USB player in incessantly for no reason and rapidly at sometimes changing from radio to USB player six times within one minute, so one becomes extremely annoyed I’ve tried to get help from the dealer Best Buy four times bringing my vehicle in to no avail. They have no idea how to fix it. I call upon you Sony. Send me a message. Help me with this problem with CarPlay on your Sony XAV – AX 4000.

Incredible Upgrade

I bought this item to upgrade the stock radio for my vehicle with new convenient technology. This unit did not disappoint. The feature that I was most interested in was the apple car play feature. This feature worked flawlessly. I would recommend purchasing a plug and play kit if you are going to install yourself, however, if you are well versed in car stereo installations, it is not very difficult. The unit fit perfectly in my vehicle and does not look like an aftermarket install. I am very happy with its ease of operation but would really have loved a knob for volume.

Great but I think my unit has a defect

I upgraded to this unit from the AX150 about 6 months ago in my fully restored 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4L. Since installing the unit, my car battery goes dead after 4-5 days (I'm on my second new battery). I've had my electrical system traced by a repair shop and they keep coming back to the XAV-AX4000 drawing power when the car is turned off. I've taken it back the installation shop several times. They keep pointing fingers at each other. I love the unit but am wondering if it is defective? Is there a known issue or update that stops it from drawing power when off? They replaced my car power outlet (always on) with a phone charger that is attached to the the XAV-AX4000, could that be the issue? Is it always on drawing 20W? Help!

Pretty much everything you’d want as far as features. But, not all features work as well as I’d like, I.e. the tuner is very weak. Also I would very much like to be able to arrange the icons on the home screen. Why would they not put the phone icon there? While driving I have to take my eyes off the road to search for the phone app. Very unsafe! Updates are very hard to accomplish.

This Receiver is GARBAGE!

I really don't know how so many people gave this head unit great reviews. Apparently they are comparing it to cassette players from the 1990s. I was told by the salesman that it had a glass screen and was much brighter than the Sony units being sold at Best Buy. The screen may be glass, but the coating makes it so dim and washed out it is ridiculous. This thing literally looks like it time traveled from 10-15 years ago. Not only is the screen a huge disappointment, but the UI is equally disappointing and clunky. Windows XP feels more fresh and modern. The settings menu is a little clunky and difficult to navigate, having to constantly click into and out of multiple options to find the setting you want to adjust. Lastly, the darn thing keeps disconnecting and reconnecting to my phone. I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, so it's not like I'm using an ancient phone. I first tried updating the firmware in the receiver, but that did nothing. I next tried updating my phone, and double checking all the phone settings. I tried unpairing the phone, then reconnecting. I even tried uninstalling Android Auto and reinstalling that. After a lengthy chat with Sony's tech support last night, the only that the tech support guy could suggest was to try factory resetting the head unit. Tried that, still didn't work, then tried updating the firmware one last time and still no luck. I will be returning this unit to my local audio shop first thing in the morning. After the fiasco with their PS5 controllers causing wrist pain and no affordable alternatives, now this huge piece of junk head unit, I must say that my days as a loyal Sony customer are sadly over. Long gone are their days of quality products that are built to last.
