One of the hardest things to do in life, is describe sound, so much so that words such as "wide, stage, depth, resolution" all get used, but quite often are used to describe something completely different. What's even harder, is to describe subwoofers. So without any use whatsoever of wide, stage, depth or resolution (well maybe depth) let's try and let you know how good this sub really is... (And it's really good!) So, with most subwoofers I have always used the old "if it's heavy, it's probably good" and it seems to have done me well so far (with one exception in the 90s when I bought a sub from a market and it sounded horrific) and this sub is no exception, it tops the scales just over 13kg, of which I'd hazard a guess at a 11kg speaker and the other into construction materials, it's a really solid build, and the finish quality is really good. Connection to the HT-A7000 is as simple as plugging it into the mains and powering on, that's it. The A7000 will detect it and connect to it fully automatically, it's really, really simple. Ok, that's all well and good, easy connection, good build quality.... But how does it sound.... Now, subwoofers tend to come in 3 distinct categories. 1 ones that sound punchy 2 ones that hit great sounding low frequencies 3 ones that sound like a giant blowing raspberries Number 3 is not good, probably best left to people's bad car installs whereas numbers 1 & 2 are good, sometimes you get subs that are both 1&2, these can have the potential to be excellent, the SA-SW5 is one of these. For setting up and checking subwoofers I generally use two listening methods. Firstly I play the Jurassic park T-Rex escape scene. In this scene you can check bass levels on many particular events, the foot steps of the approaching T-Rex, the thunder, and the roar. On the footsteps, bad subs will show a distinct warble effect after each pound as the sound tapers off, this subwoofer did not, it provided a great initial thud, followed by a perfect fall off as the sound tapers, great sounding. The thunder in bad subs will sound good, but you will get "empty" spots where the frequency is just beyond the response frequency of the sub, again this does not happen with this subwoofer, the sharp bang of the thunder coming from the A7000 is perfectly followed by a deep boom from the sub while the distant rolling bass and echoes are perfectly rendered from the subwoofer. Lastly, the T-Rex roar. Just because on a fully kitted out 5.1 or 7.1 system it sounds awesome, and yes, it really does on the SA-SW5. The second way I test subwoofers, is by playing a hi-res version of the popular dance song "Smack my (female dog) up" by the Prodigy. This song has so many elements that rely on good subwoofer set ups it's really unreal, the initial kick at 42 seconds is followed by so many elements that are deep and bassy that it's a really great way to check the capabilities of a good subwoofer. Each element, each kick, pad and synth sounds perfect to my ears. Each kick has punch, each synth has great depth, it's an overall exceptional experience. Which is how I'd sum up the SA-SW5 as a whole, it provides an exceptional experience, which in itself adds to the brilliant audio from the host A7000. For some the A7000 holds quite enough punch as it is, but for that extra bit of excellence, I would thoroughly recommend this unit.

All seemed great for a couple of weeks until I noticed a popping sound when the volume was low in a film as if the sub was either loosing signal or not coping with the signal it was getting, awaiting answers from the shop!

Upgraded a 5.1 solution to the Sony Quad speakers and SW5. In my smallish lounge space it’s a fabulous solution, delivering great surround sound and I’m very happy with the purchase. Only minor hassle is the Sony tv will lose Wi-Fi signal with the app, meaning you have to resynch them. No connectivity issues with the sound system though.

I took delivery of the SA-SW5 sub yesterday as I have had to wait a few weeks for new stock to arrive from where I purchased the theatre Quad system. After plugging it in and pressing the link button the system picked it up straight away. However on the app it shows that the sub position is on the right of the room when in fact it is on the left. After a search I found the usual conflicting AI results saying it makes no odds as the sub is omnidirectional, which is fine if that` is the case. On the other hand depending on how the question is asked, it`s a known fact that it can happen, and the advise is to delete the app as thats the only way to clear the cache/data for the connect app, and then reinstall the app and perform the setup again. This I have done but it`s still the same. I have also done a factory reset on the control box and reinstalled to no avail. The thing which concerns me more as to whether there is an issue, is that whilst doing the room calibration, I get a sound signal coming from all four speakers but not the subwoofer, this which I`m more than aware of should produce either a deep rumbling sound or a fairly loud tone of some description. I have done a factory reset twice, moved the control box so there is nothing between that and the subwoofer. Playing movies that I know are good for bass sounds, all I am getting is irregular tinny rattle sounds coming from the sub. The light is on green to show it`s connected, and all speakers are running the latest firmware. I am waiting on a reply from Sony support to see if they can advise, if not then I will be sending it back from where it was purchased.

I bought this a month ago to complement the home theatre system i also bought along with Sonys flagship TV Bravia A-95L.soo glad i did the sound deep base is so lifelike it literally places you there weather gaming or watching a movie or just listening to the Dolby Atmos this combination for me - near perfect, i haven't experienced anything else out there that can compete !! oh and with Sonys cashback offer makes this even better, thanks Sony !!

The bass is deep, rich, and powerful — when it’s working perfectly. However, I’ve noticed that it rattles at times, especially during heavy bass scenes or music with deep lows. This is disappointing, particularly for a £700 subwoofer, where you’d expect premium build quality and consistent performance. Visually and in terms of material feel, it also seems a bit inferior to the Bose Bass Module, which feels sturdier and more refined. I have had this product for 10 days. It was bought along with the rear speakers SARS5 to connect to my HT-A7000 Sound bar which I have had for a while now. So far I am pleased with all products giving a very realistic theatre sound. I found the additional speakers very easy to connect to the soundbar. I bought direct from Sony online and was very pleased with the speed of service. From my experience to date I would recommend the sound system. Although not cheap it is worth paying for the quality if you can afford it.

I teamed-up this sub-woofer with my Theatre 9 soundbar and, as good as the soundbar is, adding the SA-SW5 really does make a noticeable difference. The depth of the bass is controllable via the remote control or via the Bravia Connect app. It's easy to set up and to pair with the soundbar and you can have it working within minutes of plugging it in.

It's a great sub but has limitations, only works with Sony wireless soundbars and can't add more than one sub 😕 Also, it needs a wired line in for better connectivity outside the Sony family. For my sins I have two of these Sony subs.

I was already astounded by my Sony Quad Theatre system which has made an incredible difference to my A95L Sony Bravia XR OLED TV as it adds a whole new experience to this incredible TV. As my hearing is not good even with hearing aids, I was keen to get the most out of my new set up, so I decided I must get the sub woofer unit as well, just to see if I was missing anything more! I was delighted once I got everything up and running. I just upgraded my surround system from a 2016 Sony receiver 7.1 chan. I felt that it was getting a bit old and took up a lot of space etc. And while the sound was ok, my speakers weren't the best. I got the Sony HT-A8000 Atmos soundbar as well as the Sony SA-RS5 rear speakers. I wanted everything to be from Sony rather than mix and match. I am very happy with the ease of setup. Basically you do it all via the Bravia app and it walks you thru the steps even checking to make sure you have everything setup correctly. This speaker was setup in 5 seconds. Of course after unpacking the heavy box and plugging it in. The sound, the power, the clarity.....impressive. I hear sounds on games, tv shows and movies that i've seen and played many times that i've never heard before after installing this speaker. The bass is so deep and crisp it really feels like you are in a movie theater. Especially that i have it paired with the soundbar and rear speakers. I know it's pricy but just go for it, you'll be very happy you did. It's made very well and it will last. I've had other systems over the years including soundbars and separate subwoofers but this one I can actually say is top of the line. Just fantastic. On a side note, the app to configure everything also lets you set volume and a few other things for the speakers so once the initial automated setup is complete, you can still change things to your preferences. So if you don't want heavy bass you can lower the volume.

Design is nice and it has some heft to it. My issue is the wireless connection. I have not been able to achieve a stable connection despite multiple calls to Sony. When it works it is great and I love it. However, the connection is seldom stable. Time for another call to Sony. :-(

Would love to rate this product but I have been waiting over 3 weeks noe for the rubbish logistics that Sony have to deliver my order so I can try it. If I could rate Sony and this web site no stars I would. be warned there communication is nil - you can’t even put a complaint of service in as they don’t have the facility available…. ethers over conference or is it just denial. So do like I wished I had done and gone somewhere else. Quick to take your money but extremely slow to deliver. Hope fully they might respond to this!

Great sound - really fills the room

I bought this along with a pair of SA-RS5 to go with a HT-A9000 soundbar. Everything functions together really well and the sound is amazing. I have a Samsung 65" TV with EARC, a Sony 4K bluray player and a Panasonic HDR. Unfortunately they do not play particularly well together. The only problem is lipsync. It is always off no matter what source I use. And the annoyance is the lips move AHEAD of the visuals not behind so I can't tweak the delay. Also, on Atmos content sometimes the sound cuts completely and I have to adjust the EARC setting on my TV to downgrade the sound. So, beware SAMSUN TV owners.

I bought this fabulous subwoofer last month but before I bought it I was confused on which one to buy between SA-SW3 & SA-SW5 so I watched some reviews on YouTube and read many reviews before making up my mind to buy SA-SW5. I never regret buying this fabulous subwoofer last. The good thing I love so much about this wonderful subwoofer is that you can’t pinpoint where the sound is coming from. All my gadgets are Sony.

Loses connection with doundbar

I have had this for about 2 months and I am finding that it keeps losing connection with the soundbar. I can hear the bass disappear intermittently when using to watch tv, movies or listen to music. Worked through some general trouble shooting with Sony and now will need to contact them again (but they only provide call support mon-fri)

Slightly disappointed

Added this to the front and rear speaker setup I already had to try and give the rears some oomph but slightly disappointed that it doesn’t seem to add much that way. Plenty of bass everywhere else though!

Lovely subwoofer Sony Cashback unfair

this sounds superb - it goes well with my HT-A5000 soundbar I bought it along with SU-WB1 (£30 cashback) and SU-WL900 (£50 cashback) I was supposed to be able to claim £150 cashback. However, they processed the £80 cashback and then stated I can only claim for two items in this promotion. I feel completely conned as they could have refused the lower value of £30 and honoured the £150. I might take my money elsewhere next time

When buying couldn’t decide weather to purchase the cheaper SW3. But what a mistake that would have been. As with the sound bar and rear speakers there was nothing to do for set up except position it and plug it in. Have had sub woofers before but this takes it to another level the sound is so good, very pleased with this product.

I purchased the sub just under a month ago. The sub definitely has a premium feel, which you come to expect from Sony. Simple power and pair buttons on the rear. Establishing wireless connection to Sony sounbar is effortless. Performed calibration and all done. Me personally found the calibrated sound volume setting at 6, was way too low. Tried different volume settings. Volume 10 was good, but since I love bass, MAX was the best for me. Very good presence of sound with very good deep sound; deep sound that you can feel! Like any speaker, it's gets better over time and I am noticing improvements all the time. Fully recommended.

I bought this back in the end of July beginning of August. So far when it works I love it. I would say that it works around 90-95% of the time without incidents. I do not have the volume at max I usually keep it around 30%-50% of its max. It has Bluetooth connection issues specially if it is windy outside. I have noticed that when it is windy I tend to lose Bluetooth connection at random times while using this device. No the device is not outside and no the windows are not open. There is no draft in the home. Other than that, This this is great.

•Ensure that there are no obstacles between the SASW5 sound bar and the Bluetooth source device that could be causing interference.
•Check if other electronic devices in the vicinity could be causing electromagnetic interference and, if possible, turn them off or move them away from the sound bar and Bluetooth source device.
•Change the [RF Channel] setting to [Off], and then
change to [On] again.
•q Change the [Wireless Playback Quality] setting to
[Connection].

Unfortunately, I have not been able to try out the subwoofer. HT 89 Home theater system my purchased had performance issues so I had to box up everything and send it back to Sony . It’s been at least a week 10 days since I added it and it looks like it’ll be at least two or three more weeks before I have the system set up and can listen to it so I can say what I think about it. I bought a brand new Bravia 75 inch the mid part of 2023 it had many problems and had to be taken apart and parts replaced so I’m not having a good track record with Sony

Just bought as part of HT-A9, given the package sounds good. I wish Sony has given the wired connection possibility as well, that said works amazingly with wireless. Hope connection stays. Wish the possibility of adding another subwoofer, if it is a firmware update please do give that ooption sooner than later.

Perfect addition to HT-A9 speakers

I pre-ordered the HT-A9 speakers before the first ones were in the country 2 years ago as no new Sony AV amp was available. At the time I didn't include the SW5 as there were no reviews available and I thought the A9s on there own would be enough. After prevaricating for a long time and reading reviews I finally took the plunge. It was absolutely the right thing to do. Reviews I had read said what a difference it made to the cinematic experience. It really does make an immersive experience for Atmos and HDR programs. I was sceptical about it improving audible speech but it does make a big improvement to the audibility in action sequences. I am sure there is a technical explanation but it is of no consequence to me as I just enjoy re-watching Blu-rays and feeling smug about what I was missing.

I bought the Sony SA-SW5 Thursday 31-8-23 & it is SUPER DUPER FANTASTIC. Sony have really excelled themselves with this premium product which is teamed up with the HT-A9. The subwoofer was the missing link in terms of sound & the quality of it. I thought I was in a cinema not my lounge. As ever Sony have truly delivered KUDOS to them.

I bought a new Sony TV and A3000 soundbar. I wanted more base, particularly for films. The SW5 does not disappoint. However, I would recommend a higher spec soundbar such as the A5000 or A7000. Easy uo tune in with the soundbar.
