I have never ran to review something so quickly! This sound bar and sub is amazing. It was easy to hook up. Make sure you have an hdmi cord because it is required but doesn’t come with one. The bass is amazing!!!!! Easily my favorite. I want to have dance party’s playing music videos. I couldn’t even wait to install the bar to make the pictures look more appealing. I need my husband to install that because I’m not allowed to touch the screw gun lol. It comes with a template and will be simple. I love how it connects to my regular tv remote automatically. I hate having too many remotes. I definitely recommend this sound bar and sub!!

It stopped turning on in 6 month's, and not worth the money it would cost to ship it for the warranty coverage. I basically spent $178 on trash. Very disappointing.

This system gives adequate performance if you are not a Hifi buff. The controls are fairly basic, volume and bass but the bluetooth is a useful feature to play from phone or mp3 player. The voice button improves treble enabling clearer speach. Performance is reasonable for the money but don't expect concert hall performance.

Lousy warranty. Died 6 Months out of warranty sound bar died. All Sony would do is pay for 1/2 of the repair. I had to provide box., pay shpping and wait for repair estimate. It was hard to find a customer service phone number and they don't advertise their hours.

I purchased this sound bar 3 months ago along with my sony 50” smart tv. While the bass is good for watching action films it is very disappointing for dramas trying to make out what people are saying. I have just finished watching Adolescence on Netflix and it was nearly impossible to make out episode 4. Very disappointed with purchase.

We're sorry to hear that the HT-S400 quality isn't up to your liking, and that you're having a sound issue with your sound bar. This is not the norm, as we always strive to deliver the best quality possible.
You can reduce the BASS level by pressing the (BASS -) button on the remote control.
If the issue remains, try the steps below and test again:
1. Disconnect the AC power cord (mains lead) from the wall outlet (mains) and then reconnect after several minutes.
2. Make sure that the sound bar is updated: https://cutt.ly/EraDIpU6
3. Connect the sound bar to the TV through HDMI cable instead of Bluetooth by following the steps in the "Listening to a TV Connected with an HDMI Cable (ARC) or Optical Digital Cable" section on page 1 here: https://cutt.ly/braDPa4R
4. If you're already using HDMI connection, disconnect the cables that are connected between the TV and the speaker system, then connect them firmly again.
5. When the speaker system and TV are connected with an HDMI cable only, check that the HDMI jack of the connected TV is labeled with “ARC.”
6. Set the digital audio out setting of the TV (BRAVIA) to "PCM".

After being installed the blue tooth music skipped. You have to turn off the sound bars and then unplug it, wait for 1 minute and then plug it back in. That solved the problem.

I bought this to replace my old Yamaha YAS-207. The Yamaha soundbar was great quality, but the bluetooth pairing would fail with the Subwoofer 1 out of every 8-10 starts and this drove me crazy, so I sold it. I bought this Sony soundbar from the Sony rep at John Lewis in Bristol after he gave me a quick demo in store. I was very impressed at the quality for the price. Once I got it home and used it for a few weeks, the bluetooth pairing was lighting fast both with the subwoofer and my iPhone and iPad. After this experience, I would only go for Sony soundbars in future.

This sony soundbar has a good sound quality overall but is a bit too bassy, and can get noisy easily, especially in a small room. The setup was very easy. The subwoofer is the best part of this set, if placed correctly it has amazing quality. I would recommend it more for tv than for music.

Good sound but lacks features

I bought this to replace an old Sony 5.1 home theatre system as I wanted to get rid of all the wires and speakers. The sound is good but it lacks features such as audio sync adjustment, treble control, and Bluetooth controls. Some features require use of fiddly touch buttons on top which are easy to press accidentally. And the manual is difficult to follow. Overall, I still like it but with reservations.

I bought the HSD40 sound bar Christmas for new Samsung tv. It works for 10 to 60 minutes then go's searching for Bluetooth and the sound stops. Then you have to hit input on the remote to tv and it might last 15-30 minutes before you have to do it again. Very disappointed in Sony

We just purchased the sound bar to compliment the Bravia 65" TV that we just purchased as well. I was surprised by the ease of set-up. I have a smaller living room and the sound is really good with good bass and clarity. Only thing is that I wish that the eARC HDMI cable was supplied. I have ordered the cable. Can't speak to longevity or customer service, but if they are like all the Sony products that I've owned in the past, I think that I'll be happy.

This HT-S400 is being used to replace a very old and inexpensive sound bar / wireless woofer, being used on an equally old plasma TV. The bar sounds quite good - I have no issue with the audio quality and the remote woofer is marvelous with good solid bass. I am using the toslink optical connection just as I did with the old soundbar - and was very very surprised to hear a significant lag in the audio between the bar and TV! It introduces a quiet intrusive echo effect - the only way which can be resolved is to turn the TV volume to zero. While some TV's may have options to increase the audio latency to match an external soundbar mine does not. This issue did not exist on my ancient cheap soundbar that it was replacing. The old soundbar has no discernible lag. The issue is easy enough to avoid - just mute the TV. But still, it was unexpected - could the latency issues be something Sony could improve with a firmware update? Updating from Canadian firmware 1.114 to 1.188 made no difference. (I mention "Canadian version" because it seems other countries have a higher firmware version number 1.195 but release date is the same - SONY, this seems very odd.)

The sound from this system is excellent for the money. My only complaint is that the wall mounting holes of the rear of the sound bar are 36" apart. Since typical wall studs are 16" apart on center, the sound bar must be mounted using sheetrock anchors. This is certainly not as secure as anchoring directly into wall studs.

Easy to set up and has good sound. The separate base speaker is linked by Bluetooth and set up by itself without issues. Unfortunately I have been unable to set up a Bluetooth link to my phone, because pressing the Bluetooth button brings up a "NOT USE" message. Could do with another input socket for BlueRay player etc.

In order to listen to music by pairing with a mobile device, you'll need to pair the speaker
system and mobile device by using the BLUETOOTH function by:
1 Press and hold (BLUETOOTH) on the bar speaker for 2 seconds.
2 Make sure that the BLUETOOTH indicator on the bar speaker flashes twice repeatedly in blue and [PAIRING] appears in the front panel display.
3 On the mobile device, search for the speaker system by performing the pairing operation.
4 Pair the speaker system and mobile device by selecting “HT-SD40” from the list on the screen of the mobile device.
5 Make sure that the BLUETOOTH indicator on the bar speaker lights in blue and [BT] appears in the front panel display
6 Start audio playback with the music app on the connected mobile device.
If the issue persists, kindly reset the speaker system by:
Press and hold (power) and – (volume) on the bar speaker for more than 5 seconds [RESET] will appear on the display
Disconnect the AC power cord (mains lead).
Connect the AC power cord (mains lead), then press (power) to turn on the speaker system.

Had this now for just about a month, and I'm not even remotely impressed with it. After getting everything plugged in, connected, and set up, the sound from this speaker set lags behind the items being watched. Attempted to adjust settings, but it still lags. My last sound bar cost less than half this one, and the quality was much better. Would not recommend this to my friends.

Excellent product. Only draw back is on some Films on DVDs or Bu Ray the sound bar is muted due to the producers of the DVD. Love playing my music through it sounds very rich. The spoken words are clear as well.
