A home network allows to share files, folders and other network resources, such as a printer, between computers on the network. Follow this procedure to set up and troubleshoot a home network.
- If you are networking computers that all use either the Windows® 7, Windows® 8 or Windows® 8.1 operating systems, you can set up a Homegroup to easily share files.
- Sony recommends running system restore to create a restore point so any problems created during troubleshooting can be undone.
- This procedure must be performed while logged in to an account with Administrator rights.
- All the computers on the home network must be configured properly, depending on the operating system installed on the other computers on the network.
- Verify the computer is connected to the network.
- If you are using a wireless network connection, ensure the wireless connection is working properly .
- If you are using a wired network connection, ensure the Ethernet cable is connected to the computer and the router.
NOTE: If the wired network connection is between two computers without the use of a router, a crossover cable must be used to connect successfully.
- Configure the network connection as a Home network location.
- Configure each computer on the home network with the same workgroup name and a unique computer name.
NOTE: The default workgroup name is WORKGROUP. It is recommended to change the workgroup name to something else.
- Try to access the shared folder on another computer connected to the home network.
NOTE: If you are prompted for a username and password when trying to connect to the other computer, a procedure is available to resolve the issue.
If you are not able to access network resources, proceed with the following troubleshooting steps:
NOTE: Because each of these steps represents a possible solution to this issue, try to access network resources after completing each step.
- Change the file sharing encryption type to 40- or 56-bit.
- Configure any firewall, anti-virus, or anti-spyware software to allow networking.
NOTE: Firewall, anti-virus, or anti-spyware software can easily interfere with a network connection. If you are having trouble configuring the anti-virus software, you may want to uninstall it to determine if it actually interferes with the connection. If you then are able to access network resources, reinstall the software and contact the manufacturer for help configuring the software.
- Perform a power cycle on the router. Unplug the power cord, wait one minute and then reconnect the power cord. Wait until the router shows the appropriate indicator lights and then try to access network resources again.
- In addition to the default shared folder, share another folder on the network .
- Verify all computers on the network are configured with the same networking protocols.
- Reinstall the network adapter driver using the VAIO® Recovery software.
- If you are still unable view network resources on your home network, contact your network administrator or a local IT professional.
