How to improve the overall performance of the computer using the Task Manager utility.

    The Task Manager utility can be used to improve the overall performance of the computer in two different ways:

    • Allowing you to end the processes that take up the most memory.
    • Allowing you to end the processes that take up the most CPU.

    Follow these steps to change any of these variables using the Task Manager utility.

    WARNING: There is a risk of data loss. Before closing an application or process using the Task Manager utility, be sure to save all open files because the application may not prompt you to save data before closing, and closing critical processes may cause system instability. Also, because some applications or services are critical to the startup process, disabling them using the Task Manager utility could cause system instability.

    1. Press the Windows Logo + X key combination on the keyboard and, from the list, click Task Manager.Image

      NOTES:

      • You can also access the Task Manager by pressing the CTRL+ALT+DELETE key combination on the keyboard and clicking the Task Manager option.
      • Whatever way you access the Task Manager, because it is a traditional Windows Desktop application, if you were not already there, the interface will change to the Desktop and the Task Manager window will open.
    2. In the Task Manager window, on the Processes tab, right-click Memory.
    3. On the Memory menu, click Resource values, and then click to select Percents. Image

      NOTE: Viewing the value in terms of percentage will allow you to better understand which process is using the greatest amount of resources.

    4. To see which processes take up the most memory resources, click Memory again, so that the arrow is pointed down, to display the processes that take up the most memory from greatest to least.
    5. If desired, click to select the process that takes up the most memory resources, and then click the End Task button.
    6. To see which processes take up the most CPU resources, click CPU, so that the arrow is pointed down, to display the processes that take up the most CPU from greatest to least.
    7. If desired, click to select the process that takes up the most CPU resources, and then click the End Task button.
