How to perform a system recovery of the notebook computer.

Follow this procedure to perform a system recovery of the notebook computer.

WARNING: There is a risk of data loss. All data and added software on the hard drive will be erased during the recovery process.

IMPORTANT: The only option available on the System Recovery CD is to perform a Format and Recovery. There are no options for a Recovery without Format, Windows Only Restore, or a Single File Restore.

NOTES:

• The System and the Application Recovery CDs will not work on networked CD/DVD drives.
• The System Recovery CD may not function correctly if the hard drive has been converted to the NTFS file system.

1. Connect the computer to AC power.
2. Insert System Recovery CD disc 1 into the CD/DVD.
3. Restart the computer
4. In the VAIO System Recovery Utlity window, click the Next button.
5. In the Notes on Use window, click the Next button.
6. In the Main Menu window, click to select Default System Drive Recovery (Recommended) .
7. Click the Next button.
8. In the Product Recovery window, click the Next button.
9. In the I want to permanently delete all data... message box, click the Yes button.

   NOTE: In the Recovery window, the recovery process will be displayed.

10. In the Insert the CD #2... window, insert System Recovery CD disc 2 into the CD/DVD drive.
11. Click the OK button.
12. In the Insert the CD #3... window, insert System Recovery CD disc 3 into the CD/DVD drive.
13. Click the OK button.
14. In The system recovery is complete... window, click the OK button.
15. In the VAIO System Recovery Utility window, click the Next button.
16. In the VAIO System Recovery Utility window, click the Finish button.

NOTE: The Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Professional operating system may detect and install hardware installed on the system.

17. In the Restart the Computer window, click the Yes button.
18. The Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Professional operating system Setup Wizard will start. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the wizard.
19. In the Log On to Windows window, in the User name box, type Administrator .
20. Click the OK button.

    IMPORTANT: The Administrator account does not require a password in the default configuration.

21. In the Sony VAIO Registration window, click the Cancel button.
22. In the the Gettting Started with Windows 2000 window, click on the Exit button.
23. In the VAIO Help and Support window, click the Remind Me Later button.
24. In the Insert Application Recovery CD Disc 1 . window, insert Application Recovery CD disc 1.
25. Click the OK button.

    NOTE: The Application Recovery process may take up to 15 minutes.

26. In the Insert the Microsoft® Word 2000 CD window, remove Application Recovery CD disc 1.
27. Insert the Microsoft Word 2000 CD into the CD/DVD drive.
28. Click the OK button.
29. Follow the on-screen instructions.
30. In the Restart the computer window, click the OK button.
31. Download and install all available driver and software updates for this model from the Sony® eSupport Web site at http://esupport.sony.com
