What is the Wide Area Tap function and how does it work?

IMPORTANT: This article applies only to specific products and/or operating systems. Check Applicable Products and Categories for details.

Wide Area Tap is a function that detects vibration around the ears with the built-in acceleration sensors and determines the tap operations. With this function, you can enable various operations (such as music playback or phone calls) by not only physically tapping the LinkBuds, but also by tapping the areas around the ears.

Note: By default the Wide Area Tap is set to ON in the Sony | Headphones Connect app settings. If you turn this setting to OFF, you can only operate the LinkBuds by physically tapping them.

How to use the Wide Area Tap function

Tap the area around the ear quickly with an interval of about 0.2 seconds. The tap can be easily detected by performing a firm tap with a forefinger. The tap detection area is from the tragus (small area of cartilage near the opening of the ear) to the area between the sideburn and lower jaw bone.

Similar to the Wide Area Tap function, a tap on the LinkBuds will be detected with the built-in acceleration sensors. Tapping them firmly using a forefinger can make the detection easier.

    Troubleshooting

The LinkBuds may misinterpret an action made around your ears as a tap and the Wide Area Tap function may not react correctly. This can happen for a variety of reasons:

    • The fitting supporters may not be the best fit for your ears. Remove and refit the ear fitting supporters and then try the Wide Area Tap again.
    • Coughing, sneezing, or attaching or removing accessories or glasses may be interpreted as a vibration identical to a tap. This can cause the LinkBuds to react as if they were a Wide Area Tap action. If this is bothersome, turn off the Wide Area Tap function in the Sony | Headphones Connect app.
