Before You Start
Your firmware may already be up to date, especially if you have a new AV Receiver.If the version number is 1.516 or higher, you do not need to update.
If you're not sure, it's easy to check which version of firmware you have:
- Turn on the television and make sure it's tuned to the inputs to which the AV receiver is connected.
- Turn on the AV receiver.
- Using the AV receiver remote control, press the HOME button to display the home menu on the television screen.
- Use the arrow buttons on the remote control to select Setup, then System Setup.
- At the menu list, select Software Version.
- The firmware version currently installed on the receiver is displayed. If the version number is 1.516 or higher, it's not necessary to install this firmware upgrade.
There are 2 easy ways to update the firmware on your AV Receiver:
Download & Install
Updating your STR-ZA5000ES over the Internet
We recommend this method as it is the simplest way to update. It usually takes about 30-60 minutes. First set up the equipment, then download the update over the internet to your AV receiver.
What you need:
- An active internet connection (using Ethernet cable)
- A compatible TV
How to make sure the update goes smoothly
Updating is usually very simple. Here's how you can make sure it goes right first time:
- Read the instructions carefully or you could end up damaging your AV receiver
- Don't turn the AV receiver off - or disconnect it from the power - while it's updating
- Don't press any buttons, except the ones mentioned in the instructions
Update via Internet Instructions
- Make sure the television is turned on and is tuned to the inputs that's connected to the AV receiver.
- Make sure the AV receiver is turned on.
- Make sure the receiver is connected to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable, and then make sure the Internet Access connection status is displayed as OK. You can check the various network settings from the Information section of the Network Setup menu.
- Using the AV receiver remote control, press the HOME button to display the home menu on the television screen.
- At the home menu, use the arrow buttons on the remote control to select Setup, then System Setup.
- Select Network Update to start the update process.
- While the upgrade is installing, the message UPDATING...XXX% is displayed on the front display of the receiver.
- When the firmware update is complete, the system automatically restarts.
Note: Do not operate or turn off the receiver until the update is complete. Doing so may cause the AV receiver to be unresponsive or to require repair. - Check the firmware version. If the version number is 1.516, the firmware update was successful.
Update via USB Memory Device and your PC
We recommend you use the internet to update if you can. If not, you can use this method instead. You'll download the update to your computer, transfer it to a USB memory device, then transfer it to your AV Receiver.

- Windows 10 / 8.1 / 7
- Mac OS X

- Don't press any buttons, except the ones mentioned in the instructions
Download the update to your computer:
- Read and agree to the terms and conditions
- Download the file sony_strza5000_update_v1516.zip to your computer - remembering which directory you download it to
- Find the file on your computer, right-click on it and click Properties. Check the size is 17.4MB (18,323,454 bytes)
Save to the USB Memory:
- Extract the file to your computer:
- For Mac OS X: Go to the location where the file was downloaded and double-click the sony_strza5000_update_v1516.zip file. - The extracted folder is called "F_ZA5000.upg"
- For Windows 10 / 8.1 / 7 :
a. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and right-click the sony_strza5000_update_v1516.zip file, and then click "Extract All".
b. At the "Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders" window, click "Extract"
c. A new file will be created called "F_ZA5000.upg".
- Connect a compatible USB storage device to your computer.
- For Mac OS X operating system:
Drag and drop the F_ZA5000.upg to the root folder of the USB device. - For Windows operating system:
- Go to the directory where the folder was created, and Right-click the F_ZA5000.upg
- From the appearing menu, click "Send To..."
- Click the drive that represents your USB device (e.g. Removable Disk E:)
- The update folder will be copied onto your USB device.
- For Mac OS X operating system:
Note: The update will not be performed if the file is not copied to the root directory of the USB device or if the name of the file is modified.
Transfer the update to your AV Receiver
First get the equipment ready, then transfer the update to your AV Receiver.
Get the equipment ready:
- Turn on your TV and check it's tuned to the input your AV Receiver is connected to. (So if the AV Receiver is connected to the HDMI 2 socket, choose HDMI 2 as the input)
- Turn on the AV Receiver
- Make sure no other USB devices are connected to the AV Receiver, if there are, please unplug it from the AV Receiver
Transfer the update:
- Make sure the television is turned on and is tuned to the inputs that's connected to the AV receiver.
- Make sure the AV receiver is turned on.
- Insert the USB storage device (with the latest software) into SETTING (USB) port of the receiver.
- Using the AV receiver remote control, press the HOME button to display the home menu on the television screen.
- At the home menu, use the arrow buttons on the remote control to select Setup, then System Setup.
- Select USB Update to start the update process.
- While the upgrade is installing, the message UPDATING...XXX% is displayed on the front display of the receiver.
- When the firmware update is complete, the system automatically restarts.
Note: Do not operate or turn off the receiver until the update is complete. Doing so may cause the AV receiver to be unresponsive or to require repair. - After the system restarts and the update is complete, you may remove the USB device from the receiver.
- Check the firmware version. If the version number is 1.516, the firmware update was successful.
