This utility updates the HDR-SR1 firmware and resolves an issue where stereophonic or surround sound data is not processed properly in the high definition record mode.

NOTE: This update is for Sony® High Definition HDR-SR1 camcorders with serial numbers in the following ranges:

  • US Models with serial numbers between 320001 and 332530
  • Canada Models with serial numbers between 670001 and 672000

Before You Start

Important Notes

  • You will need the serial number of your camcorder in order to download the update.
    NOTE: The serial number can be found on the bottom of the camcorder.
  • You will need any size empty Memory Stick Duo™ memory card in order to install the update.
  • During the installation of the update, be sure that you are logged in as the Administrator or as a user with Administrative rights.
  • To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs. The Taskbar should be clear of applications before installing the update.
  • It is highly recommended to print out the instructions as a reference during the installation process.

Format Memory Stick Duo™ Memory Card

  1. Remove the battery from the camcorder then connect the AC Adapter to the camcorder and the wall outlet.
  2. Power on the camcorder.
  3. Insert the Memory Stick Duo™ memory card you want to format into the camcorder.
    NOTE: If the Memory Stick Duo™ media is formatted with the computer the firmware may not be updated properly. Be sure to use the camcorder to format the Memory Stick Duo™ media.
    WARNING!!: All data, including protected data, will be erased when you format the Memory Stick Duo™ media.
  4. Touch the "Home" button on the camcorder LCD screen.
  5. Touch the "MANAGE HDD/MEMORY" tab on the camcorder LCD screen.
  6. Touch "Format" on the camcorder LCD screen.
  7. The "Format the Memory Stick" screen will appear. Touch "Yes".
  8. The "Are you sure?" screen will appear. Touch "Yes".
  9. Executing will appear on the screen while the Memory Stick Duo™ media is being formatted. When Completed appears on the screen touch "OK".

Download & Install

Download and Extraction Instructions

  1. To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs. The Task bar should be clear of applications before installing the update.
  2. Click the "Download Now" link to go to the Input Handycam Serial Number page.

  3. NOTE: You will need the serial number of your camcorder in order to download the update. The serial number can be found on the bottom of the camcorder.
  4. Input the serial number found on the bottom of your HDR-UX1 camcorder, then click the "OK" button.
  5. Download the SR1FU.EXE file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
  6. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click the SR1FU.EXE file to begin the extraction. One folder named SR1FU containing six files will be extracted.
  7. NOTE: You will need an empty Memory Stick Duo™ memory card in order to install the update. If you do not have an empty Memory Stick Duo™ memory card follow the steps in the Format Memory Stick Duo™ memory card section.

Software Updating instructions

  1. Remove the battery from the camcorder then connect the AC Adapter to the camcorder and the wall outlet.

  2. WARNING!!: The camera may be rendered inoperable if the power fails during this update.
  3. Power on the camcorder.
  4. Connect the camcorder to the computer using the supplied USB cable.
  5. When the "USB Select" options appear on the LCD screen, touch the "Memory Stick COMPUTER" option.

    NOTE: Close any windows that may appear on the computer screen.
  6. Double-click the SR1FU folder to open the folder.
  7. Double-click the UX1SR1FU file to start the firmware update. A "Handycam Updater" window will open.

    NOTE: If nothing happens in 5 minutes after this window appears, please disconnect the USB cable from the camcorder and connect it again.

    NOTE: If the operating system on your computer is Microsoft® Windows® 2000 go to step 11.

    NOTE: If the message "Please Connect camcorder." appears follow the steps below.
    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the camcorder.
    2. Double-click the "cleanup" file in the SR1FU folder.
    3. The message "Driver removed" will appear.
    4. Begin the firmware update process again from step 3, connecting the camcorder to the computer using the supplied USB cable.
  8. The "Found New Hardware Wizard Opens" select "No, not at this time" then click the "Next" button.
    NOTE: If Windows® XP Service Pack 2 is not installed on your computer this option will not appear, skip this step.
  9. Confirm "Install the software automatically" is selected then click the "Next" button.
  10. Click the "Finish" button.
  11. A "Found New Hardware" message should appear above the system tray.
  12. On the camcorder LCD screen touch the "Memory Stick COMPUTER" option.

  13. NOTE: If the USB select screen options do not appear skip to step 12.

    NOTE: If the message "Finishing..." keeps displaying for more than 5 minutes follow the steps below.
    1. Click the "Cancel" button to close the Firmware Update Tool.
    2. Disconnect the AC Adapter from the camcorder then reconnect the A/C Adapter.
    3. Try the firmware update process again from step 3, connecting the camcorder to the computer using the supplied USB cable.
  14. When the message "Now ready to update" appears on the computer screen, click the "OK" button.
    NOTE: If the message "Failed to delete drivers. If you cannot reconnect camcorder as USB mass storage, please try CleanUp" appears follow the steps below.
    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the camcorder.
    2. Double-click the "cleanup" file in the SR1FU folder.
    3. The message "Driver removed" will appear.
    4. Begin the firmware update process again from step 3, connecting the camcorder to the computer using the supplied USB cable.

    NOTE: If the firmware has already been updated an "already updated" message appears.
Please continue with the Updating the Camcorder Firmware instructions section below.

Updating the Camcorder Firmware

Please follow these steps exactly or the update process may fail.

  1. Disconnect the supplied USB cable from the camcorder.
  2. Use the "POWER" switch to power off the camcorder. Confirm the LCD screen turns off.
  3. Power on the camcorder. The firmware update process will automatically start in the camcorder. Nothing will be displayed on the LCD screen while the firmware is being updated. The Memory Stick Duo Access lamp will be on.
  4. After approximately 15 seconds the Access lamp turns off.
    WARNING!!: Do not power off the camcorder while the firmware is being updated.The camera may be rendered inoperable if the power fails or is interrupted during this update. Please securely connect the AC Adaptor to avoid unintentional disconnection of the power source.


    NOTE: If the Memory Stick Duo Access lamp continues to flash, the firmware update may have failed. Format the Memory Stick Duo™ memory card again and repeat the update process starting at step 1 found in the "Software Updating instructions" section.
  5. Disconnect the AC Adaptor from the camcorder, then reconnect the AC Adaptor again.
    NOTE: Make sure the battery is not installed in the camcorder.
  6. Power on the camcorder and verify the camcorder is operating normally.
    NOTE: If the firmware update is not completed properly, or the camcorder does not operate properly after the update please call Sony support at 1-800-222-SONY (7669).
  7. NOTE: Format the Memory Stick Duo™ media in the camcorder before recording images.
