    Unless stated otherwise, the file listed below must be installed BEFORE the System Software Update in order for it to work properly. If more than one Required file is listed, install them in the order presented on this page.

    In order to install the System Software Update the latest version of the nav-u Tool software must be installed on the computer.

    IMPORTANT: This file is only for use with the models identified. Not all models are sold in all countries.

    Benefits and improvements

    This utility updates the NV-U73T nav-u™ portable navigation system software from version 3.00 to version 3.02 and provides the following benefits:

    Improvements over system software version 3.00:

    • Adds the Photo Viewer application
    • Adds the Quick Link function
    • Shortens the time to acquire a GPS satellite signal in certain conditions, such as between tall buildings
    • Adds the ability to store the track log on Memory Stick Duo™ media
    • Improves touch panel responsiveness
    • Improves the quality of the calculated route in certain situations
    • Adjusts the font size of the street names that display on the tool bar for improved visibility
    • Improves French TTS (Text To Speech) pronunciation.
    • Corrects TMC reception in Toronto

    WARNING!!: If your firmware version is 1.00 or 2.00, do not download and install the new firmware.

    Before You Start

    Important Notes

    • WARNING!!: If your firmware version is 1.00 or 2.00, do not download and install the new firmware.
    • In order to install this update the nav-u™ Tool must be installed on the computer.
    • To install this update the computer must have an available USB port.
    • Please allow about 30 minutes to perform the system software update.
    • The nav-u device must be fully charged in order to perform a successful system software update.
    • WARNING!!: During the installation of the system software update make sure that you:
      • Do not disconnect the USB cable from the computer or the nav-u device.
      • Do not power off the nav-u device, enter into standby mode, or reset the unit.
      • Do not power off the computer, enter the computer into standby mode, or restart the computer.
      If the system software update process is interrupted the nav-u device may require service at a Sony Service Center.
    • During the installation of this file, be sure that you are logged in as the Administrator or as a user with Administrative rights.
    • To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs. The Taskbar should be clear of applications before proceeding.
    • It is highly recommended to print out these instructions as a reference during the installation process.

    Check the System Software Version

    1. Make sure the nav-u portable navigation device is not connected to the computer.
    2. Power on the nav-u device.
    3. Tap "Menu" and then tap the Settings tab (the red toolbox).
    4. At the "Settings" screen, tap General.
    5. At the "General Settings" screen, tap "Firmware Version".
      Note: It may be necessary to scroll through several screens to locate the "Firmware Version" option.
    6. At the "Firmware Version" screen, check the firmware version listed. If the firmware version is 3.02 or higher, do not install this system software update.
    7. WARNING!!: If your firmware version is 1.00 or 2.00, do not download and install the new firmware.

    Download and Installation Instructions

    1. To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs. The Taskbar should be clear of applications before proceeding.
    2. Download the SONYNAVU_U73T_3.2.CN.BIN file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
    3. Connect your nav-u personal navigation device to the computer using the supplied USB cable.
    4. Power on your nav-u personal navigation device and wait until the "Connect to PC" message is displayed on the nav-u screen.
    5. WARNING!!: During the installation of the system software update make sure that you:
      • Do not disconnect the USB cable from the computer or the nav-u device.
      • Do not power off the nav-u device, enter into standby mode, or reset the unit.
      • Do not power off the computer, enter the computer into standby mode, or restart the computer.
      If the system software update process is interrupted the nav-u device may require service at a Sony Service Center.
    6. Start the nav-u Tool software on the computer.
    7. At the "nav-u tool" window, click "Upgrade System".
    8. On the right side of the Upgrade Screen, verify that the target version is 3.00.
      Note: If the target version is 3.02 or higher, do not attempt to install this system software update.
    9. On the left side of the Upgrade Screen, click the "Browse" button, and go to the directory where the SONYNAVU_U73T_3.2.CN.BIN file was downloaded and then click "OK".
    10. In the "Name" box, click to select "3.02 cn NV-U73T" update, and then click the upgrade button.
    11. After the update file is transferred to the nav-u device a "Transferring Upgrade file completed." message is displayed on the computer.
    12. WARNING!! Do not disconnect the nav-u device from the computer. The system software update is still continuing. Progress messages are displayed on the nav-u screen.
    13. After the system software update is complete, the nav-u device will automatically shut down and restart.

    Check the System Software Version (optional)

    1. Disconnect the nav-u portable navigation device from the computer.
    2. Tap "Menu" and then tap the Settings tab (the red toolbox).
    3. At the "Settings" screen, tap General.
    4. At the "General Settings" screen, tap "Firmware Version".
      Note: It may be necessary to scroll through several screens to locate the "Firmware Version" option.
    5. At the "Firmware Version" screen, check the system software version listed. If the firmware version is 3.02 the firmware has been successfully updated.
      Note: If the firmware version is 3.00, please download and install the update again.
