Before You Start

Check the Current Software Version

Please follow the steps below check the current software version to determine if your STR-DH710 Multi Channel AV Receiver needs an upgrade to support 3D features.

Front Panel Controls
  1. Press On/Standby Button (on/standby) to turn off the receiver.
  2. While holding down the "INPUT MODE" and "DISPLAY" buttons, press On/Standby Button to display the software version.
  3. If the software version shown on the receiver display is "VER 1.004" or "VER 1.011", please continue to the next section.
    Note: This upgrade can only be installed if the current software version is 1.004 or 1.011.
  4. Press On/Standby Button to turn off the receiver.

Important Notes

  • A drive with audio CD disc burning capability, and a new blank CD-R disc are required to create the upgrade disc.
    Note: A CD-R disc is highly recommended. Do not use a CD-RW disc.
  • A player capable of playing an audio CD, that has Digital Optical Output, is required to perform this upgrade.
  • The player must be connected to the STR-DH710 player by a Digital Optical Cable to perform this upgrade.
  • If you cannot burn an audio CD or do not have a Digital Optical Cable, or if you require assistance, please contact Sony Canada customer support at 877-899-SONY (877-899-7669).
  • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.

Download the Firmware and Create an Upgrade Disc

  1. Download thestrdh710-3dfw.zipfile to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
  2. Extract the update install files:
    Note:Two files will be extracted:H71_0900M___D___H200.WAVandH71_0901M__D__H200.wav.
    • For Microsoft® Windows Vista® or Windows® 7 operating system:
      1. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and right-click thestrdh710-3dfw.zipfile, and then click "Extract All.
      2. At the "Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders" window, click "Extract"
      3. The update files will be extracted to a new folder called "strdh710-3dfw".
    • For Windows XP operating system:
      1. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and right-click thestrdh710-3dfw.zipfile, and then click "Extract All.
      2. At the "Extraction Wizard" dialog box, click "Next".
      3. Click "Next".
      4. Click "Finish".
      5. The update files will be extracted to a new folder called "strdh710-3dfw".
    • For Macintosh® OS X operating system:
      1. Go to the location where the file was downloaded and double-click thestrdh710-3dfw.zipfile.
      2. The update files will be extracted to a new folder called "strdh710-3dfw".
  3. Use the create an audio, or music, CD option of your CD burning software to create the upgrade disc from the two files (H71_0900M___D___H200.WAVandH71_0901M__D__H200.wav).
  4. CD Burning Notes:
    • Do not create a data disc. In order for the upgrade disc to work, you must create an audio, or music, CD.
    • Use a new blank CD-R disc to create the upgrade disc.
      Note:A CD-R disc is highly recommended. Do not use a CD-RW disc.
    • Disable or uncheck volume leveling in your disc burning software.
    • Burn the disc at the lowest speed supported by your disc burning software.
    • The upgrade disc must be finalized. Be sure to select "Finalize CD (No further writing possible)" in your CD burning software to finalize the disc.
    • If write errors occur during the CD burning process, discard the disc and create a new upgrade disc.
    • Burning the disc using packet writing software is not supported.
    • Do not use an upgrade disc created using any other process than the one described above.

Firmware Upgrade Instructions

Select an audio/video component that can play an audio (music) CD and that has Digital Optical Output. You will use this player to perform the STR-DH710 Multi Channel AV Receiver software upgrade.

Digital Optical Connection
  1. Disconnect the player and the receiver from AC power.
  2. If the player and receiver are connected by an HDMI cable, disconnect the HDMI cable.
  3. Connect the player to the receiver using an optical digital cable.
  4. Reconnect the player and the receiver to AC power and turn them both on.
  5. Set the audio output on the player to Optical Out.
    Note:Please consult the player's owner manual for more information about the Optical Out setting.
  6. Turn the "INPUT SELECTOR" dial on the receiver to select "TV".
    Note:To test that the player and receiver are connected and set correctly, play a standard audio CD.
  7. Insert the upgrade CD you created in the previous section into the player.
    IMPORTANT: Do not play the CD yet.

  8. PressOn/Standby Button(on/standby) to turn off the receiver.
  9. While holding down the "INPUT MODE" and "MUTING" buttons, pressOn/Standby Button.
    Note:"UPDATE" appears on the receiver display.
  10. Continue to hold down the buttons until "PLAY DISC" appears on the receiver display.
  11. Start the playing the upgrade CD in the connected player. After a few seconds "UPDATING" will appear on the receiver display. The upgrade takes about five minutes to complete.
    Note:If "UPDATING" doesn't appear after 10 seconds, play the second track.
  12. When "COMPLETE" appears on the receiver display the upgrade is complete.
  13. Remove the upgrade CD from the player.
  14. Disconnect the player and the receiver from AC power and disconnect the digital optical cable.
    Note:If the digital optical cable is part of your usual connection setup, it is not necessary to disconnect it.
  15. Reconnect the HDMI cable if you disconnected it in step 2.
  16. Reconnect the player and the receiver to AC power and power on the player.

Confirm Installation (optional)

Front Panel Controls
  1. PressOn/Standby Button(on/standby) to turn off the receiver.
  2. While holding down the "INPUT MODE" and "DISPLAY" buttons, pressOn/Standby Buttonto display the software version.
  3. If the software version shown on the receiver display is "VER 1.104" or "VER 1.111" the upgrade was successful.

Troubleshooting

IssueTroubleshooting Steps
"DISC ERR" appears on the receiver display.
"UPT ERR" appears on the receiver display.
  • Check to make sure that the player was not stopped before the upgrade process finished.
  • Perform the upgrade procedureagain and make sure that the upgrade CD starts at the beginning and plays to the end.
"UPDATING" does not appear on the receiver display after the player is started.
  • Check that the upgrade CD is in the player.
  • Check that the audio output on the player is set to Optical Out.
    Note:Please consult the player's owner manual for more information about the Optical Out setting.
  • Verify that the player and the receiver are connected correctly and securely using a digital optical cable.
  • Play the first track on the upgrade CD again.
  • If "UPDATING" still doesn't appear, play the second track on the upgrade CD.
The AC power is turned off or disconnected before the upgrade procedure is complete.
Cannot perform the upgrade when using a PlayStation® 3 as the player.
  • Set the output frequency of the PlayStation 3 to 44.1 kHz:
    1. Select "Settings".
    2. Select "Music Settings".
    3. Set the "Output Frequency" to "44.1 kHz".
  • Perform the upgrade procedureagain and make sure that the upgrade CD starts at the beginning and plays to the end.
