What is the difference between Edge LED, Dynamic Edge LED, and Intelligent Peak LED Backlight?
Conventional LCD televisions use a Cold Cathode Fluorescent (CCFL) backlight. Sony® Edge LED Backlight uses an array of white LEDs. In addition, optical guide sheets make for highly uniform brightness across the screen. Compared to fluorescent backlighting, the Edge LED Backlight enables Sony designers to make the television substantially thinner, sleeker, and sexier, to complement the décor of more rooms. Compared to fluorescents, the LEDs are also more energy efficient and free from environmentally harmful mercury.
Dynamic Edge LED:
High contrast makes the image punchy and vibrant. This system adjusts backlight brightness according to the picture content. It shines brightly when the picture is bright, and can turn completely off when the picture is black. There are two standard measurements of contrast: dynamic and static. Sony Dynamic Edge LED backlight improves both. Dynamic contrast ratio equals the brightness of an all-white screen divided by the brightness of an all-black screen, which in this case is zero. In this way, dynamic contrast is effectively infinite. Static contrast ratio measures the range between black and white on the same screen. The Dynamic Edge LED system divides the screen into regions, each of which can be dimmed independently. So you also get powerful static contrast. Within a single scene, you'll see a powerful combination of intense highlights, bright whites and deep, rich, satisfying blacks. The system also adjusts the video signal for consistent tonal reproduction across all the backlight segments.
Intelligent Peak LED Backlight:
High contrast makes the image punchy and vibrant. Sony achieves spectacular contrast with the Intelligent Peak LED Backlight. This system varies backlight brightness according to the picture content. It shines brightly when the picture is bright, and can fall to black when the picture is black. An array of LEDs directly behind the screen divides the picture into numerous regions, each of which can be dimmed or boosted independently. Individual segments can be boosted to roughly double brightness, for outstanding peak highlights. As a result, is a powerful combination of intense highlights, bright whites and deep, rich, satisfying blacks.
