Adjust the picture settings on your Android TV

The Picture settings allow a wide array of color, contrast, motion settings, and brightness changes that can improve the viewed content on your TV.

Google TV™ models

On the remote control, press the or (Quick Settings) button, then select Display & Sound → Picture → the desired option, then click the item you want to change:

Notes:

Settings are adjustable for the types of content viewed, such as streaming video, DVD/Blu-ray Disc, USB drive, and composite/component video content.
A brief description of each item is displayed on the picture setting screen of your TV. Using this article as supplementary information, you can easily change the settings.
You can adjust the picture settings while watching the actual TV screen.
When Auto Picture Mode is set to On, the Picture mode will change automatically according to the content, so you may notice the brightness or saturation settings have changed suddenly. If you do not like the settings to change automatically, turn this setting Off.

Picture mode is an image quality setting that is preset to be suitable for the genre of the program and the type of image. The following are explanations for each of the settings available in Picture mode:

The availability of adjustable functions depends on the model of the TV.
When Auto Picture Mode is set to On, the Picture mode will change automatically according to the content.
By selecting Reset picture settings for ***, you can reset the picture settings for the current picture mode to the factory default.
You can shortcut Picture mode directly by pressing the or (Quick Settings) button on the remote control.

Picture mode	Overview	Explanation and Concept
Vivid	Clear colors and contours, as well as enhanced contrast.	Bright and dark colors and enhanced edges suit bright places like storefronts.
Standard	Recommended for everyday use at home.	Bright, high color depth and enhanced edges, a suitable mode for home environments.
Cinema	Recommended for watching films at home.	Suitable mode for watching movies at home. Brightness, color depth, and edges are balanced to watch movies.
Game	Recommended for gaming.	Suitable mode for playing games, minimizing image delay (the time until the operation by the game controller is displayed on the television), and optimizing picture quality.
Graphics	Recommended for graphics and use with computers.	Suitable mode to display graphics contents showing characters or tables properly. This mode is recommended when using the TV as a computer monitor.
Photo	Recommended for photo viewing at home.	Suitable mode to display photos in a standard environment, such as at home. Brightness, color depth, and edges are balanced to view photo content.
Custom	Emphasizes true reproduction of the original signal.	Mode for customizing picture settings according to your preferences.
IMAX Enhanced	Recommended for watching IMAX Enhanced content.	Optimized for viewing IMAX Enhanced content the way it was intended. IMAX Enhanced is available depending on the model of the TV.

Auto Picture Mode

Setting items	Overview, Setting Values, and Explanation
Auto Picture Mode	Setting Values: Off or On The Auto Picture Mode function can only be used with HDMI input. If you do not like the Picture mode settings changing automatically, turn this off.

Light sensor

Setting items	Overview, Setting Values, and Explanation
Light sensor	Optimizes the picture quality automatically by sensing the color and luminance of ambient light. Setting Values: Off or On Adjusts the screen brightness according to the surrounding brightness. When the TV is in a dark environment, the screen brightness is darker to avoid extreme brightness.
Auto luminance level	Adjust the screen's luminance level according to the ambient light's luminance level to reduce glare. Setting Values: Off or On
Auto tone curve	Adjusts the balance between light and dark in the picture, making it easier to see dark areas of the screen, even in a blight room. Setting Values: Off or On
Auto white balance (only for specific models)	Optimizes the color temperature for the current ambient light condition. Setting Values: Off or On

Brightness

Adjust the backlight to display the brightest whites and deepest blacks.

Note: The available adjustable Setting options depend on the TV model.

Setting items	Overview, Setting Values, and Explanation
Brightness	Adjusts the luminance of the screen. Setting Values: Min (0) to Max (50) Up: the screen gets brighter Down: the screen gets darker Power consumption increases when the screen is brighter and decreases when it is darker, the same as lighting equipment. For 2023 models: To make the screen brighter, set Power saving to Off.
Contrast	Adjusts the brightness by controlling the signal range. Setting Values: Min (0) to Max (100) When the contrast is lowered, the white level becomes darker, and the difference between the light and dark parts of the white level becomes small, making the picture darker.
Gamma	Adjusts the light and dark balance by controlling the middle range luminance while maintaining white and black levels. Setting Values: Min (-3) to Max (3) A function that adjusts the light and dark balance. Increasing the gamma correction brightens the picture, and decreasing it darkens the picture.
HDR tone mapping	Adjusts the brightness and gradation balance automatically by analyzing the HDR content's luminance levels. Setting Values: Min (0) to Max (100) This is the only variable for HDR signals. Adjusts the brightness and gradation balance automatically by analyzing the HDR content's luminance levels.
Black level	Adjusts the picture's black level by controlling the signal level. Setting Values: Min (0) to Max (100) Increasing the black level makes the dark area details (patterns) more visible, and decreasing the black level makes the dark areas less visible.
Black adjust	Enhance the black by analyzing the luminance level of the picture in real-time and automatically adjusting the dark levels. Setting Values: Off, Low, Medium, or High A function that improves the sense of contrast and depth in the image by reproducing the black parts of the image darker. The signals input to the TV are analyzed individually in real-time and controlled to achieve an optimum black correction level.
Adv. Contrast enhancer	Automatically corrects the contrast by analyzing the luminance level of the picture in real time. Setting Values: Off, Low, Medium, or High Optimally controls the sense of contrast of the image. By converting the image to the dynamic range that the TV can reproduce, the image has a brighter contrast feeling, feeling of depth, and stereoscopic effect. For 2023 models: This function is disabled in Game mode.
Black equalizer	Enhance the black by analyzing the luminance level of the picture in real time and automatically adjusting the dark levels. Setting Values: Off, Low, Medium, or High This function is only available in Game mode.
Auto local dimming	Optimizes contrast by analyzing the picture's luminance levels in real-time and automatically adjusting the brightness of each part of the backlight. Setting Values: Off, Low, Medium, or High A function that improves the reproduction of blacks and improves contrast by automatically adjusting the brightness of the backlight partially according to the partial brightness of the image.
Peak Luminance	Optimizes contrast, especially in dark scenes, by analyzing the screen's luminance levels in real time and making bright areas brighter. Setting Values: Off, Low, Medium, or High

Color

Setting items	Overview, Setting Values, and Explanation
Color	Adjusts the color tone by controlling the color saturation level. Setting Values: Min (0) to Max (100) A function that makes the color depth deeper or paler.
Hue	Shifts the overall color in the red (R) and green (G) direction. Setting Values: R50 to G50 A function that shifts the hue towards red or green. Mainly used to adjust the analog signal image whose hue tends to shift during transmission.
Color temperature	Adjust the color temperature that is standard for color reproduction. Setting Values: Warm, Natural, Cool, Expert1, or Expert2 A function that adjusts the color temperature as a reference for the color reproduction of images. It can be adjusted to four stages that emulate day white or the bulb color of electric lighting.
Live Color	Adjusts the vividness of colors by correcting the strength of each color. Setting Values: Off, Low, Medium, or High A function that expands the colors of the image to the reproducible colors of the TV and achieves vivid color reproduction. Color expansion of the input signal is not performed when set to Off. At Low or higher, expansion of the color reproduction range is performed.

Clarity

Adjusts the picture clarity and reduces roughness.

Setting items	Overview, Setting Values, and Explanation
Sharpness	Adjusts the picture detail by emphasizing the edges and details of objects and people in the image and controlling noise balance. Setting Values: Min (0) to Max (100) 50 is the reference. Raising it above 50 makes the contours and details clearly visible, and lowering it blurs the picture.
Reality Creation / Resolution	Enhances the video's detail by performing Super Resolution processing and noise reduction while analyzing the picture in real time. Resolution is adjustable by selecting Manual. Setting Values: Auto, Manual, or Off Adjust the Resolution (Min (0) to Max (100)) by selecting Manual. Ability to reproduce images with fine detail by emphasizing details in the image using Sony’s proprietary database type Super Resolution function.
Random noise reduction	Reduces dot and color noise that tends to appear in dark areas of the screen. Setting Values: Off, Low, Medium, High, or Auto Random noise appears as rough noise during screen movement and also appears when the reception state is poor with analog broadcasting. Random noise occurs when the broadcasting station raises the camera's sensitivity and is often seen in dark scenes. This function reduces repetitive random noise.
Digital noise reduction	Reduces noise seen around letters and compression noise, such as block noise. Setting Values: Off, Low, Medium, High, or Auto Digital noise, such as mosquito noise, quickly occurs in images such as terrestrial digital broadcasts, as well as other noise that appears to be blocky. This function reduces this video compression noise.
Smooth gradation	Creates smooth graduations on flat areas of the picture by reducing noise that appears gradually and streaks in the graduation part of the picture. Setting Values: Off, Low, Medium, or High A function that eliminates and smooths out noise (banding) appearing gradually and as stripes in the gradation parts of the image.

Motion

Setting items	Overview, Setting Values, and Explanation
Motionflow	Adjusts the Smoothness and Clearness to your preference. Setting Values: Auto, Custom, or Off A function that increases video frames and smoothly displays moving images. For 2023 models: This function is disabled in Game mode. Adjusts the Smoothness and Clearness by selecting Custom. Smoothness: Adjusts the strength of smoothness using frame interpolation of the input signal. Setting Values: Min (0) to Max (3) Clearness: Adjusts the strength of clarity by inserting a black frame to reduce motion blur. Setting Values: Min (0) to Max (3) ;Note: Depending on model: High or Low
Motion blur reduction	Adjusts the strength of clarity by inserting a black frame to reduce motion blur. Setting Values: High, Medium, Low, or Off Note: For OLED models: On or Off This function is only available in Game mode.
Film Mode(GB), CineMotion(US)	Detects video of films and other content and optimizes picture quality by using IP (Interlaced-Progressive) conversions and frame interpolation. Setting Values: Auto or Off Note: Depending on model: High, Low, or Off A function that smoothly reproduces the motion of film content, such as movies (images shot at 24 frames per second).

Android TV models

To access the settings, refer to one of the following methods, depending on your remote control:

Press the (Quick Settings) button, then select Settings — Display & Sound — Picture— the desired option.
Press the ACTION MENU button, then select Picture — the desired option.

Notes:

For some TV models, select Advanced settings in Picture to select the detailed options for Brightness, Color, Clarity, and Motion.
Settings are adjustable for the types of content viewed, such as streaming video, DVD/Blu-ray Disc, USB drive, and composite/component video content.
You can adjust your picture settings in real time.

Picture mode

Picture mode is an image quality setting that is preset to be suitable for the genre of the program and the type of image. Basic settings are automatically selected based on the mode you select.

Cinema pro (Cinema1)	Suitable picture for film-based content.	For Movie content: Mode for faithfully reproducing the style intended by the film studio.
Cinema, Cinema home (Cinema2)	Suitable picture for watching movies at home.	For Movie content: Mode of brightness and color adjusted assuming use at home.
Sports	Suitable picture for watching sports.	For Sports content: Mode especially for fast-moving pictures.
Animation	Suitable picture for watching animation.	For animated content: Mode optimally adjusted for animation, such as the emphasized outlines of cartoons.
Photo-Vivid	A picture with enhanced edges and high contrast.	For picture: Suitable mode of bright and dark colors and enhanced edges for standing out in bright places.
Photo, Photo-Standard	Suitable basic picture for home use.	For picture: Suitable brightness mode, color depth, and enhanced edges for home environments.
Photo-Custom	Customize picture settings.	For picture: Mode for customizing picture settings according to preferences.
Game	Suitable picture for playing video games.	For video games: Mode for optimum image quality in video games, with the shortest image delay (the time until game controller operation is reflected in the TV).
Graphics	Suitable picture for displaying charts, tables, graphs, and illustrations.	Mode for using the TV as a computer monitor.

Auto Picture Mode

Auto Picture Mode	Automatically selects the picture mode based on the content being viewed. Setting Values: Off or On The Auto Picture Mode function can only be used with HDMI input.

Light sensor

Setting items	Overview, Setting Values, and Explanation
Light sensor	Adjusts the luminance level of the screen according to the surrounding brightness. Setting Values: Off or On Adjusts the screen brightness according to the surrounding brightness. When the TV is in a dark environment, the screen brightness is darker to avoid extreme brightness.

Brightness

Adjusts the backlight to display the brightest whites and deepest blacks.

Note: You can shortcut to access Brightness directly by pressing the (Quick Settings) button on the remote control.

Gamma	Adjusts the light and dark balance. Setting Values: Min (-3) to Max (3) A function that adjusts the light and dark balance. Increasing the gamma correction brightens the picture, and decreasing it darkens the picture.
Black level	Adjusts the black level of the picture. Setting Values: Min (0) to Max (100) Increasing the black level makes the dark area details (patterns) more visible, and decreasing the black level makes the dark areas less visible.
Black adjust	Enhances the black in images for stronger contrast. Setting Values: Off, Low, Medium, or High A function that improves the sense of contrast and depth in the image by reproducing the black parts of the image darker. The signals input to the TV are analyzed individually in real-time and are controlled so that an optimum black correction level is achieved.
Adv. contrast enhancer	Automatically adjusts the contrast based on picture brightness. Setting Values: Off, Low, Medium, or High Optimally controls the sense of contrast of the image. By converting the image to the dynamic range that the TV can reproduce, the image has a brighter contrast feeling, feeling of depth, and stereoscopic effect.
Auto local dimming	Optimize contrast by adjusting brightness in individual sections of the screen. Setting Values: Off, Low, Medium, or High A function that improves the reproduction of blacks and improves contrast by automatically adjusting the brightness of the backlight partially according to the partial brightness of the image.
X-tended Dynamic Range	Adjusts the peak luminance level to display the brightest whites and deepest blacks. Setting Values: Off, Low, Medium, or High A function that further improves contrast by partially increasing the luminance of bright areas. For an LCD TV, by local dimming function, darkening the backlight partially, and instead of this, increasing backlight level of bright area.

Color

Color	Adjusts the color saturation level. Setting Values: Min (0) to Max (100) A function that makes the color depth deeper or paler.

A function that reproduces 4K original quality video from Blu-ray HD video.
Random noise reduction	Reduces repetitive random noise. Setting Values: Off, Low, Medium, High, or Auto Random noise appears rough during screen movement and when the reception state is poor with analog broadcasting. Motion

Motionflow	Refines moving images. Settings Values: [Smooth, Standard, Clear, True Cinema, Custom, or Off] or [Auto, Custom, or Off] A function that increases video frames and smoothly displays moving images. Adjusts the Smoothness and Clearness by selecting Custom. Smoothness: Setting Values: Min (0) to Max (3) or (5) Clearness: Setting Values: Min (0) to Max (2) or (3)
*Film Mode(GB), CineMotion(US)*	Detects the type of videos (such as movies and CG) and performs the best video correction process. Settings Values: [Off, Low, Medium, or High] or [Off or Auto] Function that smoothly reproduces the motion of film content, such as movies (images shot at 24 frames per second).

Other TV models

You can adjust the following picture settings. To access the settings, on the remote control, press the HOME button, then select Settings — System Settings or Display — Picture.

Note: The availability of the function to adjust depends on the TV model.

Reality Creation	Adjusts fineness and noise for a realistic picture. Resolution: Adjusts fineness and clarity. Select Manual to adjust the Resolution.
Mastered in 4K	Optimizes picture quality for Blu-ray Discs mastered in 4K. Applies to 1080/24p signals only.
Noise Reduction	Reduces the picture noise (grainy picture) in a weak broadcast signal.
Random noise reduction	Reduces repetitive random noise.
MPEG Noise Reduction	Reduces the picture noise in MPEG-compressed video.
Digital noise reduction	Reduces video compression noise.
Motionflow	Refines moving images.
CineMotion/Cinema Drive/Film mode	Provides improved picture movement when playing BD (Blu-ray Disc), DVD, or VCR film images. Select Auto to reproduce the original film-based content. Note: If the image contains too much noise, CineMotion/Cinema Drive/Film mode is automatically turned off even if Auto is selected.
Advanced Settings	Set detailed Picture settings such as Gamma or Live Color.
Intelligent Picture Plus Set-up	Intelligent Picture Plus: Enhances picture quality according to preferred settings, channel, or video input. Signal Level Indicator: When On is selected, the signal level bar is displayed when you select an analog channel or video input. Picture Optimization: This allows you to enhance the picture to your preferred settings.
