01The answer

Why the FX3 Leads for Handheld Work

The specific features that make the FX3 the strongest small-body choice for documentary, travel, gimbal and event shooting.

Full-frame sensor
High sensitivity with a standard movie ISO of 80 to 102,400 keeps available-light and night footage usable without extra lighting.
Recording formats
UHD 4K up to 120p and 10-bit 4:2:2 internal XAVC, Full HD up to 240p and 16-bit RAW output over HDMI to a compatible recorder.
Stabilization
5-axis in-body image stabilization with an Active mode for video steadies walking shots, with a slight 1.1x crop.
Autofocus
Fast Hybrid AF with 627 phase-detection points covering 89% of the frame for movies, plus Real-time Eye AF for people.
Cage-free body
Multiple 1/4-20 mounting points let you attach monitors and microphones directly, so many setups skip a separate cage.
S-Cinetone
A cinematic look inspired by VENICE colorimetry that delivers attractive skin tones straight out of the camera.

02Options

How Do the Sony Cinema Line Options Compare?

Four Cinema Line bodies suit handheld shooters, each with a different trade-off between size, sensor and production features.

  • FX3: best all-round handheld

Full-frame low light, 4K/120p, Active stabilization and a supplied XLR handle. No built-in ND listed, so plan for external filters.

  • FX30: Super 35 value

Cinema Line controls in a 20.1MP Super 35 body with Dual Base ISO 800/2500. The XLR handle is optional on the body-only model.

  • FX2: full-frame with XLR handle

    33MP full-frame sensor, Dual Base ISO 800/4000 and Dynamic Active stabilization. 4K 60p requires APS-C/Super 35mm mode.

  • FX6: built-in ND

Electronic variable ND of 2 to 7 stops, 12G-SDI and a modular cinema body. Larger and less convenient for travel.

Choosing between them

Pick the FX3 for dim interiors, night work, fast full-frame primes and maximum subject separation, or when you need to match an FX6 or other full-frame cameras. It is the smallest professional Sony package that still delivers a full-frame cinema image.

Pick the FX30 when you already own Super 35 lenses, want a lower entry point or shoot mostly in daylight. Pick the FX6 when built-in ND and production connectivity matter more than portability, since its dedicated cinema form factor works best on a shoulder rig or tripod.

Outside Sony, buyers often weigh the Canon EOS C70, which offers internal ND and a conventional cinema layout on a Super 35 sensor. The FX3 is smaller and full-frame, with stronger autofocus for fast-moving documentary and event work. The Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K suits controlled narrative production but relies more on manual focus and external power.

How to Get Steady Handheld Footage

Stabilization helps most when your lens choice and grip work with it.

  1. Mount a wide or moderately wide lens, since 16mm to 24mm is far easier to hold steady than a telephoto.
  2. Keep both hands on the camera and use the top handle as a second grip point.
  3. Turn on Active stabilization for walking shots once you have framed for the slight 1.1x crop.
  4. Switch to Standard stabilization for focal lengths of 200mm or longer, as Sony recommends.
  5. Move to a gimbal for long, deliberate walking moves rather than relying only on in-body stabilization.

04Kit

Which Lenses, Audio and Media Suit the FX3?

E-mount lenses, the XLR handle and the right cards complete a handheld kit.

FE 16–35mm F2.8 GM II
A versatile wide zoom for documentary, interiors and moving shots.
FE 20–70mm F4 G
A broad standard range with relatively compact handling for travel.
FE 24–70mm F2.8 GM II
A general-purpose professional zoom for events and commercial work.
FE 24mm F1.4 GM
A fast wide prime for low-light documentary and environmental shots.
FE 35mm F1.4 GM
A natural perspective with strong subject separation.

The supplied handle adds two full-size XLR/TRS combo inputs with physical level dials. Combined with the 3.5mm body input, the FX3 records up to 4 channels, so a solo operator can run professional microphones without a separate recorder. Note that audio is not recorded in S&Q mode.

An internal cooling fan enables uninterrupted 4K 60p recording under Sony test conditions (USB power, XAVC S-I, 25°C ambient). Real runtimes vary with frame rate, temperature and settings.

Match your cards to the mode: XAVC S-I 4K 60p needs SDXC V90 or faster, XAVC S and XAVC HS 4K 120p need SDXC V60 or faster, and S&Q 4K 120p in All-I needs CFexpress Type A (VPG200 or higher). CFexpress Type A supports every internal mode.

Common Mistakes When Buying a Compact Cinema Camera

The errors that cost handheld shooters time, footage or money.

  • Budget for lenses, batteries, media, audio and stabilization before choosing the body.
  • Plan for screw-on, variable or matte-box ND, since FX3 specifications list no built-in ND filter.
  • Frame for the crop when using Active stabilization or 4K/120p, which adds a 1.1x crop.
  • Choose a fast prime for low-light handheld work, as it can matter more than a body upgrade.
  • Avoid treating 4K/120p as a default mode, because it raises data use and light requirements.
  • Use wireless microphones when subjects move, since the XLR handle cannot fix poor mic placement.
  • Plan shots around backlight and low contrast, which can still challenge Eye AF.
