Flexibility and performance in a small package
SELP16502 08/10/2024 par N IO (Belgique)
I will preface this by saying that I don't share the negative opinions, all over the internet, about the first generation 1650 lens. I have owned in total three copies (still have two), and was able to capture some nice photos with them. I bought the second generation hoping for an improvement in image quality and auto focus performance, and also because it's has a pure plastic main barrel and focus ring, as opposed to the first generation which is covered in a thin aluminium sheet, prone to scratching. I have included two photos taken with the new lens, one of them shot at 16mm (two bikers - minimal crop), and one shot at 40mm (several bikers - heavy crop). They were taken with an a6500, both at 1/2000sec shutter speed, f8 aperture. The 16mm photo at ISO 320, and the 40mm one at ISO 500. Raw photos, developed in Lightroom Classic. Image performance At 16mm I couldn't see much difference compared to the first generation. There seems to be a lot of sample variation with these lenses, but my first gen ones were good so I was able to get decent photos with them. At 50mm the new lens is somewhat sharper, which is a welcome improvement as it is where the previous model mostly suffered. I can say that it now provides decent sharpness at the long end, should you need more you can always sharpen in post. Auto focus performance The photo with multiple bikers was taken in shutter burst mode Hi (8fps). I shot hundreds of photos in this mode during the cycling event, and I got plenty of sharp ones. As a matter of fact, most were in focus. Image stabilisation Supposedly the new lens now transmits its gyro data to the camera (for stabilisation in post), as I only take photos though I can't verify this. As a side-note, I was already satisfied with the previous generation's OSS performance, and my cameras have stabilised sensors so no issues there anyway. Unexpected, welcome improvement! I haven't heard it mentioned in any of the (very few) reviews about the new lens, however the new lens remembers the zoom setting it last had when turned on again. This means that if you are shooting for example at 23mm, and the camera goes to standby, the lens will return to 23mm once the camera is turned on again. It seems to remember the last setting for a couple of days or so, after that it resets to 16mm. This is a big quality of life improvement for me , as the old model always starts at 16mm, even if the camera is turned off for a moment (or goes to standby mode to save power). Negative point The only high-stress part of the lens, the mount, is now made out of plastic. One star minus for this, I find it bad and what's even worse it seems to be spreading among OEM camera and lens manufacturers (at least three of them now). Conclusion I like the improvements of the new lens, except the plastic mount of course, and I am satisfied with the purchase although I paid more for it than those who will buy it as a kit with a new camera. Obviously it doesn't perform as well as a prime lens, nor as well as a constant aperture zoom lens several times its size, weight and cost. I am pleased with the flexibility offered by such a small, light package. My walk-around setup is one a6500 with the Sony 11mm f1.8 lens, together with a second a6500 with the new 1650 lens. A light and compact kit, which allows me to shoot anything I want. And if i need to go really minimal, one a6500 with the new 1650 on gives me a level of flexibility and performance which would be impossible some years back, out of something that fits in a jacket pocket. For potential users I can recommend it, however you need to understand the limitations of your gear and work around them. If you do so you will be rewarded with great photos, without having to haul around large, heavy equipment. For the manufacturer Please stop making lenses with plastic mounts, I believe many buyers (me for sure) wouldn't mind paying a bit more to get a better product.
