Audio · Hi-Res buying guide
How does hi-res audio compare across different price ranges?
Spending more buys a cleaner, more controlled signal path and better materials, not proportionally more audible detail. For most listeners the WH-1000XM6 (LDAC wireless plus noise cancelling) or the wired MDR-1AM2 delivers real hi-res playback, while the MDR-Z1R and premium Walkman players serve dedicated home and audiophile systems.

01The Basics
What Does Hi-Res Audio Actually Mean?
The formats, codecs and connections that decide whether you hear the extra resolution.
- CD quality
- 16 bit/44.1 kHz audio at 1,411 kbps. Well-mastered CD-quality recordings remain the baseline that hi-res improves on.
- 24 bit/96 kHz
- The most common hi-res specification, carrying about 3.2x more data than CD. 24 bit/192 kHz carries about 6.5x more.
- Lossless formats
- FLAC and ALAC compress files to save space without discarding audio data, while WAV and AIFF store it uncompressed.
- DSD
- Direct Stream Digital, the format used to make Super Audio CDs. Premium Walkman players support it natively over a balanced connection.
- LDAC
- Sony's high-quality Bluetooth codec, running up to 990 kbps at 96 kHz. Treat it as a high-quality lossy codec, not a wired equivalent.
02Price Tiers
What Do You Get at Each Price Tier?
How signal path, build and features change as you move from wireless to flagship wired gear.
- Flagship wired systemBalanced cables, dedicated amp, premium materials
- Premium wired headphonesNo Bluetooth codec in the chain
- LDAC wirelessHi-res Bluetooth with a compatible source
- Basic BluetoothSBC or AAC, convenience over resolution
Wireless with noise cancelling
The WH-1000XM6 supports SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3, reaches 40 kHz over LDAC and keeps a wired fallback.
Accessible wired hi-res
The MDR-1AM2 pairs a 40 mm liquid crystal polymer driver with 16 ohm impedance, so a phone drives it easily.
Premium and flagship wired
The MDR-Z7M2 offers a larger over-ear design. The MDR-Z1R adds a magnesium dome driver and Japanese craftsmanship.
Dedicated Walkman players
The NW-WM1AM2 and NW-WM1ZM2 add native DSD, S-Master HX amplification and local file playback away from your phone.
Where the flagship premium goes
At the top of the range, the money goes into materials, component design and consistency. The MDR-Z1R uses a closed-back, resonance-free housing, a beta titanium and leather headband, sheepskin ear pads and silver-coated oxygen-free copper cables, including a balanced cable that separates left and right signals.
A flagship headphone also expects a flagship source. Sony pairs the MDR-Z1R with the TA-ZH1ES Signature Series headphone amplifier, which handles PCM up to 32 bit/384 kHz and DSD 11.2 MHz over balanced and unbalanced outputs. Without a capable source, much of that investment goes unheard.
03Connection
Wireless or Wired: Which Hi-Res Path Fits You?
Convenience and noise control against a stable, source-controlled listening chain.
The WH-1000XM6 suits planes, trains, offices and outdoor listening. Sony specifies 20 Hz to 20 kHz at 44.1 kHz and 20 Hz to 40 kHz with LDAC at 96 kHz, plus up to 30 hours of battery life with noise cancelling on and up to 40 hours with it off.
Wired headphones such as the MDR-1AM2, MDR-Z7M2 and MDR-Z1R remove battery dependence and Bluetooth codec processing entirely. They reward quiet rooms and buyers who already own a good digital-to-analog converter (DAC) or headphone amplifier. The MDR-1AM2 is closed-back, which limits leakage, but it does not offer active noise cancelling.
04How to Choose
How Do You Pick the Right Tier?
Answer these questions in order to match your budget to how you actually listen.
- Decide where you listen most: noisy commutes favor the WH-1000XM6, quiet rooms favor wired headphones.
- Check your source: confirm LDAC support for wireless, or a suitable headphone output for wired listening.
- Check your music: hi-res only helps if you own or stream hi-res files from a well-mastered recording.
- Start wired hi-res with the MDR-1AM2, which runs easily from phones and portable players.
- Step up to the MDR-Z7M2 or MDR-Z1R only when your amplifier and source can match them.
- Add a Walkman such as the NW-WM1AM2 if local files and DSD matter more than streaming from your phone.
05Mistakes
What Mistakes Waste Money on Hi-Res Gear?
The common traps that cost more than they return.
- Don't treat an extended frequency figure like 40 kHz as proof of better tonal accuracy.
- Don't assume hi-res streams beat a well-mastered CD-quality recording every time.
- Check fit and ear seal, which affect bass and isolation more than file resolution does.
- Don't buy an expensive wired headphone without checking your source, connector and output power.
- Skip a premium Walkman if you mainly stream from your phone and don't need local storage.
- Remember native DSD on the NW-WM1AM2 needs a balanced connection; unbalanced output converts DSD to PCM.
