This utility updates the BD/DVD Home Theatre system firmware to version 010, and provides the following benefits:

Improvements over firmware version 006:

  • Improves BD-Java compatibility to enhance interactivity with some BD-ROMs.
  • Improves BD-Live performance to enhance interactivity.

Additional improvements over original firmware:

  • Adds BD-Live functionality.
    • BD-Live allows you to enjoy additional content and services while playing a BD-Live capable disc.
    • For optimal performance, we recommend that you use a Broadband Internet connection to access BD-Live content and services.
    • BD-Live content and services require external USB flash memory (sold separately) for local storage.

Before You Start


Check the Current Firmware Version

  1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the BD/DVD Home Theatre system is connected.
  2. Power on the BD/DVD Home Theatre system.
  3. If the system starts to play a disc, press the "STOP" button and wait until the Sony® Blu-ray Disc™ screen is displayed on the television before proceeding to the next step.
  4. At the xross media bar™ (XMB™ menu), use the arrow keys on the remote control to select "Setup" - "System Settings", and then press the ENTER button.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select "System Information", and then press the ENTER button.
  6. The firmware version currently installed on the BD/DVD Home Theatre system will be listed on the television screen.
    Firmware Version
    If the last three digits of the version number are 010 or higher, it is not necessary to install this firmware update.

How To Get the Firmware Update

There are three ways to obtain the BD/DVD Home Theatre system firmware update:

  • Network Update:
    • The Network Update operation is straightforward, so it is highly recommended that you use the Network Update method.
    • You will need to connect the BD/DVD Home Theatre system to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable.
    • Please see the Network Update Instructions section below, for more information.
  • Create an Update Disc:
    • If you cannot connect the BD/DVD Home Theatre system to your Internet source, please use the disc update method.
    • Please click the Download Now link at the top or bottom of this page to download the firmware update.
    • Please see the Download the Firmware and Create an Update Disc section below, for more information.
    • A drive with CD disc burning capability, and a new blank CD-R disc are required to create the update disc.
  • Request an Update Disc
    • If you cannot create a CD on your computer, or if you require assistance, please contact Sony Canada customer support at 1-877-899-SONY (7669).
    • After you receive the disc, please see the Disc Update Instructions section below, for more information.

Network Update Instructions

The Network Update operation is straightforward, so it is highly recommended that you use the Network Update method to update the BD/DVD Home Theatre system firmware.

  • Important Notes
    • If you have not done so already, please check the current firmware version to determine if this firmware update is needed for your BD/DVD Home Theatre system.
    • WARNING!! Please follow the update instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the update process and may cause the BD/DVD Home Theatre system to be unresponsive or to require repair.
    • WARNING!! Do not power off the BD/DVD Home Theatre system or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware update may cause the system to be unresponsive or to require repair.
    • In order to use this update method it is necessary to have the system correctly connected to an active Internet connection.
      Note: If you cannot connect the system to your Internet source, please see the How To Get the Firmware Update section above for information about firmware update disc options.
    • In order to perform the firmware update, it is necessary to have the system correctly connected to a compatible television.
    • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.
  • Firmware Update Instructions

    WARNING!! Please follow the update instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the update process and may cause the BD/DVD Home Theatre system to be unresponsive or to require repair.

    The firmware update process usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on system configuration and network connection.

    1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the BD/DVD Home Theatre system is connected.
    2. Connect the "LAN" terminal on the system to your Internet source using an Ethernet cable.
    3. Power on the BD/DVD Home Theatre system.
    4. If there is a disc in the system, please remove the disc.
    5. At the xross media bar™ menu, use the arrow keys on the remote control to select "Setup" - "Network Update" and then press the ENTER button.
    6. The message "Perform version update?" is displayed on the television.
    7. Select "OK" and then press the ENTER button.
    8. The download process starts and the download screen is displayed on the television.
    9. During the download the message "DOWNLOAD */9" is displayed on the television and on the system front display.
      Note: The "*" changes to "0" through "9," indicating the download progress.
    10. After the download is complete, the update starts and "UPDATE" appears on the system front panel display.
    11. While the update is installing the message "UPDATE */9" is displayed on the system front display.
      Note: The "*" changes to "0" through "9," indicating the update progress.
    12. The firmware update is complete when "COMPLETE!" appears on the system front panel display.
      WARNING!! Do not operate or power off the system until this message is displayed. Doing so may cause the BD/DVD Home Theatre system to be unresponsive or to require repair.
    13. The BD/DVD Home Theatre system will automatically power off.
    14. Power on the BD/DVD Home Theatre system
    15. Check the current firmware version to confirm that the update has successfully installed.
      Note: If the last three digits of the version number are 010, the firmware update was successful.

  • Network Firmware Update FAQ
    Q: "SYSTEM ERROR" or "UPDATE NG" is displayed on the system front panel display. A: Please perform the following procedure:
    1. Disconnect, and then reconnect, the AC power cord.
    2. Power on the BD/DVD Home Theatre system.
    3. Follow the Network Update Instructions again.

    If the issue persists after performing the update again, please contact Sony Support at 1-877-899-SONY (7669) .

    Q: When running network update, the television displays the message, "Connection status cannot be confirmed" and you cannot perform the firmware update. A: There may be a problem with the network connection. Verify that the network connection and settings are correct.
    1. Check the Ethernet cable to make sure it is securely connected to the "LAN" terminal on the system and to the Internet source.
    2. Check the BD/DVD Home Theatre system network settings and confirm that the system has its own IP address.
      Note: If you use a proxy server, enter the IP address of the proxy server you use, instead of the proxy host name, in the "Proxy Server" input field.
    3. Follow the Network Update Instructions again.
    Q: The power was shut down during the update process. A: Power on the BD/DVD Home Theatre system, and then follow the Network Update Instructions again.
Q: The network update process has two parts, first the download and then the update. If, after the download part is finished, the firmware update process is still not finished after running after more than 30 minutes. A: Please contact Sony Support at 1-877-899-SONY (7669) .

Download the Firmware and Create an Update Disc

If you cannot connect the BD/DVD Home Theatre system to your Internet source, please use the disc update method.

  • Important Notes
    • If you have not done so already, please check the current firmware version to determine if this firmware update is needed for your BD/DVD Home Theatre system.
    • WARNING!! Please follow the update instructions carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may interrupt the update process and may cause the BD/DVD Home Theatre system to be unresponsive or to require repair.
    • WARNING!! Do not power off the BD/DVD Home Theatre system or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Loss of power during the installation of the firmware update may cause the system to be unresponsive or to require repair.
    • Use a brand new CD-R disc to burn the firmware update. The system may not be able to correctly read a dirty disc or a disc with scratches.
      Note: A CD-R disc is strongly recommended. Do not use a CD-RW disc.
    • A drive with CD disc burning capability, and a new blank CD-R disc are required to create the update disc.
    • In order to perform the firmware update, it is necessary to have the system correctly connected to a compatible television.
    • It is highly recommended that you print out these instructions for use as a reference during the installation process.
  • Download and Disc Creation Instructions
    1. Download the UPDATE_BDV1000_VER010.EXE file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
    2. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and verify that the size of the UPDATE_BDV1000_VER010.EXE file is 51,284,992 bytes.
      1. Right-click the UPDATE_BDV1000_VER010.EXE file, and click "Properties".
      2. On the "UPDATE_BDV1000_VER010.EXE Properties" screen, verify that the "Size:" listed is "48.9 MB (51,284,992 bytes)".
        Note: The "Size on disk:" listed may be different. That is normal.
      3. If the file size is different than the "51,284,992 bytes", please download the UPDATE_BDV1000_VER010.EXE file again.
    3. Double-click the UPDATE_BDV1000_VER010.EXE file to begin the process to extract the firmware update.
    4. At the UPDATE_BDV1000_VER010.EXE dialog box, type a location, or click the "Browse..." button to select a location for the uncompressed update, and then click "OK". The UPDATE_BDV1000_VER010.ISO file will be extracted to the specified location.
    5. Use the "Burn Image" option of your CD burning software to create the update disc from the UPDATE_BDV1000_VER010.ISO file.
    6. For Windows 7 users: You can burn an image using the "Windows Disc Image Burner" feature. Please follow the steps below:
      1. Right-click the UPDATE_BDV1000_VER010.ISO file that you just extracted to a temporary or download directory and select "Burn disc image".
      2. At the "Windows Disc Image Burner" dialog box, next to "Disc burner", verify that your optical drive is selected.

        Note: Ensure that the "Verify disc after burning" box is selected.
      3. Place a new CD-R disc into the computer disc drive.
        Note: A CD-R disc is highly recommended. Do not use a CD-RW.
      4. Click the "Burn" button.
      5. The burning process begins and the update disc is created and finalized.
        Note: Please wait until after "The disc image has been successfully burned to disc" message appears to remove the disc from the computer.
    7. CD Burning Notes:
      • IMPORTANT: At this time, not all versions of CD burning software are able to create an update disc. If you have difficulty creating a disc, please consider using the network update method or requesting a disc by contacting Sony Canada customer support at 1-877-899-SONY (7669) . You may also opt to check back later to see if a newer version of the firmware update has become available.
      • Do not create a data disc. In order for the update disc to work, you must create it using the "Burn Image" option of your CD burning software.
      • The update disc must be finalized. Be sure to select "Finalize CD (No further writing possible)" in your CD burning software to finalize the update disc.
      • If write errors occur during the CD burning process, discard the disc and create a new update disc.
      • Burning the disc using packet writing software is not supported.
      • Do not use an update disc created using any other process than the one described above.
Disc Update Instructions

The instructions below are for how to install the firmware update using a disc. The steps are the same whether you downloaded the firmware and created the disc, or whether you ordered the disc from Sony.

  • Firmware Update Instructions

    WARNING!! Do not power off the system or disconnect it from the AC power outlet. Doing so may damage the system to the point of requiring repair.

    WARNING!! Do not press any buttons, except as instructed, until the update is complete. Doing so may damage the system to the point of requiring repair.

    Note: The firmware update process usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes.

    1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the BD/DVD Home Theatre system is connected.
    2. Power on the BD/DVD Home Theatre system.
    3. Place the update disc in the system, and close the disc tray.
    4. After the disc is loaded, the message, "Perform version update?" is displayed on the television.
    5. Use the remote control to select "OK", and then press the ENTER button.
    6. The update process starts and "UPDATE" appears on the system front panel display.
    7. While the update is installing the message "UPDATE */9" is displayed on the system front display.
      Note: The "*" changes to "0" through "9," indicating the update progress.
    8. The firmware update is complete when "COMPLETE!" appears on the system front panel display.
      WARNING!! Do not operate or power off the system until this message is displayed. Doing so may result in your system being unresponsive and requiring repair.
    9. Remove the update disc from the system.
    10. Power on the BD/DVD Home Theatre system.
    11. Check the current firmware version to confirm that the update has successfully installed.
      Note: If the last three digits of the version number are 010, the firmware update was successful.

    If The Update Disc Does Not Eject

    If the update disc does not eject even though "COMPLETE!" is displayed, please follow the steps below.

    1. Simultaneously press and hold the "Volume-" button and the "Open/Close" button on the main unit.
      Note: Pressing the "Volume-" button and the "Open/Close" button on the remote control does not work. It is necessary to press the "Volume-" button and the "Open/Close" button on the BD/DVD Home Theatre system.
    2. Keep pressing the "Volume-" button and the "Open/Close" button until the disc tray opens.
    3. Remove the disc.
  • Disc Firmware Update FAQ
    Q: "SYSTEM ERROR" or "UPDATE NG" is displayed on the system front panel display. A: Please perform the following procedure:

    2. Power on the BD/DVD Home Theatre system.
    3. Follow the Disc Update Instructions again.

    Q: "UPDATE" is not displayed on the system front panel display when the update disc is inserted. A: Remove the update disc from the system and delete the update file you downloaded to your computer. Follow the steps in the Download the Firmware and Create an Update Disc section to create a new update disc and then follow the steps in the Disc Update Instructions section to install the firmware update.
    Q: How can I verify that the update disc was burned correctly? A: After creating the update disc, check that the disc name is "BV10-00010" in your computer.
    Q: The power was shut down during the update process. A: Power on the BD/DVD Home Theatre system, and then follow the Disc Update Instructions again.
Q: When I double click on the UPDATE_BDV1000_VER010.EXE update file I downloaded from the update web site, the UPDATE_BDV1000_VER010.ISO file is not created and the following error message appears: "Win32 Cabinet Self-Extraction". A: The download may have failed. Delete the file you downloaded to your computer and follow the steps in the Download the Firmware and Create an Update Disc section to create a new update disc
Q: The firmware update process is still not finished after running for more than 30 minutes. A: Please contact Sony Support at 1-877-899-SONY (7669) .
