Unable to connect to a Wi-Fi network with the Reader Digital Book
IMPORTANT: This article applies only to specific products and/or operating systems. Check Applicable Products and Categories for details.
If you're unable to connect your Reader™ Digital Book to a Wi-Fi® network or receive an error when trying, refer to the information below for the possible cause:
- If you have a secured network, it requires a password. This is the password or security key that was created when you set up your Wi-Fi network. If you have forgotten your password, contact the device manufacturer of your access point (wireless router) or your internet service provider for assistance. The password for a wireless connection is NOT the password you may have used for your Sony® Reader Store account.
Note:
- In many cases, the password for your home Wi-Fi network is a combination of upper and lower case letters and numbers. When writing it down, we recommend that you clearly mark the upper case letters along with letters like S, which can look like a number 5, or a Q, which can look like a G.
- In many cases, when Wi-Fi connections fails, it's due to the password being entered incorrectly because of these types of errors. So it is extremely important to ensure the password is entered correctly.
- It's recommended to download and install the latest firmware version. Downloads are posted on your model support page.
- It's possible that the network feature would not turn on because the remaining battery power is too low. Charge the Reader for a few minutes, and then try again.
- Make sure Wi-Fi is turned on and check the signal strength of the access point.
- Scan the available access points in the vicinity and select a new one.
- Make sure that the security method (WEP/WPA), the static IP address and the proxy settings are correct.
- The access point is using an unsupported security method or encryption key.
- Public Wi-Fi networks may require a user ID and password. In this case, you must enter a correct user ID and password to establish a network connection.
- The access point has the MAC address filter enabled. To check the MAC address, do the following:
- Press the Home button.
- Open the Settings menu. Use the appropriate steps for your model:
- PRS-T1:
- Tap the right arrow (>) to go to the second page of the Home menu.
- Under System, tap Settings.
- PRS-T2 or PRS-T3:
- Tap Applications.
- In the Applications menu, tap Settings.
- PRS-T1:
- In the Settings screen, press About.
- In the About screen, press Device Information.
- On the Device Information screen, make sure that this MAC address is accepted by the access point.
- The Wi-Fi network settings of the access point are not correct. Adjust the settings as described in the manuals that came with the access point and in any information provided by the network administrator.
- The Reader is too far from the access point. Move the Reader closer to the access point and scan again.
- Obstacles such as walls, metal or concrete between the Reader and an access point may adversely affect the connection. Try moving the Reader to a different location and scan again.
- There is other equipment nearby using the 2.4 GHz frequency band (such as a cordless phone, a microwave oven, or Bluetooth® computer equipment). Move the other equipment away or turn them off.
- The Wi-Fi network service is temporarily not available or degraded. Check with the network administrator for the status.
